2019 Bojangles' Southern 500, Darlington Raceway - Predictions and Odds

2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 Predictions and Odds

The 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series regular-season only has two races left.

Darlington is a race filled with drama under normal circumstances.

It’s one of the most physically demanding tracks on the schedule.

The Southern 500 is also the longest race in the schedule time-wise.

With so much at stake, things will be even more dramatic.

Nine drivers have already locked themselves in the postseason.

In other words, seven spots are, mathematically, up for grabs.

Only six of the series’ regular drivers have a win at Darlington in the Cup Series.

Denny Hamlin is one of the two active drivers with multiple victories at Darlington.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s most recent win at the oval came in 2017.

He started last year’s race from the pole but finished tenth.

Hamlin’s other win came in 2010, his best season in NASCAR.

He also holds the best finishing average at the track, an impressive 6.15 in 13 starts.

Following his first-ever winless season, in 2018, he has definitely regained his old form.

Hamlin is having a career year, which started with a win in the Daytona 500.

The Joe Gibbs driver has four victories this season, including two in the last five races.

Hamlin is red-hot at the moment, riding a streak of six consecutive top 5 finishes.

If the run continues, he is the early favorite to win at Darlington.

Hamlin is third in the points standings.

Kevin Harvick

Kevin Harvick has six consecutive top 10 finishes at Darlington.

He scored a dominant win during his championship-winning season in 2014.

The Stewart-Haas driver has three pole-positions in the last five races at the oval.

Harvick led 518 of the 1,842 laps during that span.

The 2014 champion has two wins in the last five races this season.

Harvick is fifth in the points standings and is building up momentum at the right time.

Martin Truex Jr.

Martin Truex Jr. won at Darlington in 2016.

The Joe Gibbs driver led a combined 134 laps in the last three races at the track.

Truex had a dominant showing in 2017, leading 76 laps and winning both stages from the front row before finishing eighth.

He has three top 10 finishes, including a win, in his last five races at Darlington.

The 2017 champion is fourth in points this season, having scored three top 5 in the last five races.

Truex has four wins, ten top 5 and 15 top 10 finishes in 24 races.

Outside Picks for the 2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500

Brad Keselowski

Driver 888Sport NJ
Keselowski, Brad +700

* 21+ | NJ only | If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER

Brad Keselowski is the defending race winner.

It was his first victory at Darlington after a few near-misses.

Keselowski had a dominant run in 2015, starting from the pole and leading 196 laps and finished second after a late restart.

He also led 46 laps in 2016 after starting the race from the front row.

The Team Penske driver has two pole-positions and four top 10 finishes in the last five races this season.

Keselowski also has three top 10 finishes, including last year’s win, in his last five starts at Darlington.

The 2012 champion is currently fifth in points with three victories, eight top 5 and 13 top 10 finishes.

Kyle Larson

Driver 888Sport NJ
Larson, Kyle +600

* 21+ | NJ only | If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER

Kyle Larson is inching closer to ending his winless streak, now at 70 races.

The Chip Ganassi driver has turned his season around during the Summer.

Larson had only scored one top 5 and three top 10 finishes before Sonoma.

He has scored four top 5 and seven top 10 finishes in the nine races since then.

While Larson has never won at Darlington, it could very well change this season.

He has an impressive 456 laps led at the track, which is already good enough for fifth among active drivers.

The fact that Larson achieved these numbers in only five starts makes it even more impressive.

His average finish of 7.6 is good enough for third.

The Chip Ganassi driver only missed out on a top 10 finish once at the oval.

Larson is up to 11th in the standings, and will likely make it to the postseason on points.

Jimmie Johnson

Driver 888Sport NJ
Johnson, Jimmie +4000

* 21+ | NJ only | If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER

If you want to go with a real underdog then Jimmie Johnson is your pick.

The seven-time champion finds himself in an unusual do-or-die situation.

Johnson had a terrible run in the last six races, with a best finish of 15th.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver finished three of these races outside the top 30.

Right now, Johnson is 36 points behind the cutoff.

He most likely needs a win in order to avoid missing out on the postseason for the first time in his career.

Darlington could be the place to make it happen.

The seven-time champion leads all active drivers with three wins at the “Too Tough to Tame” oval.

However, Johnson has not finished higher than 12th in his last five starts there, including two results outside the top 30.

His last top 5 finish came in 2014, while his last win came in 2012.
