Cam Rising is expected to make his return after missing last week’s contest with a hand injury
Utah’s front seven ranks top-40 in Def Rush Success Rate
Star running back Ollie Gordon II is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry
After silence fell over the crowd when Cam Rising was slow to get up after a collision with a water station in week two against Baylor, fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the star quarterback is expected to make his return in a top-25 NCAAF Big 12 matchup against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. His production is much needed as the Utes offense looks noticeably worse when he is not under center.

Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Utah | +2.5 (-110) | +125 | Over 53.5 (-105) |
Oklahoma State | -2.5 (-110) | -150 | Under 53.5 (-115) |
My Pick: Utah Moneyline (+125) at FanDuel
Should Cam Rising make his return, the Utes offense will be more well-rounded as they will receive an uptick in pass production. Being able to complement their ground game with a lethal pass attack adds extra stress to the Cowboys' second level of their defense, especially since they will be without two starting linebackers. Factor in a stout front seven that is capable of bottling up star running back Ollie Gordon II in the trenches and the Utes will have all the tools to secure a massive win in conference play.

After missing all of last season rehabbing a torn ACL, Utah fans held their breath when Cam Rising came out of the locker room in street clothes after suffering an injury to his throwing hand. Luckily, him sitting out was purely precautionary as it has already been reported that he is expected to make his return for Saturday’s top-25 Big 12 matchup against Oklahoma State. His production under center is vital as the Utes' pass attack looks noticeably worse when Rising is on the sideline.
With Rising leading the charge, Utah’s pass attack will find themselves in a position to thrive as the Cowboys' defense has been average at best in their efforts of limiting pass production. In three games played, Oklahoma State ranks 55th in Def Pass Success Rate and 57th in Def Pass PPA. To make matters worse for the Cowboys, they will be without starting linebackers Collin Oliver and Justin Wright who both suffered long-term injuries.
Losing Collin Oliver is especially damaging as he was their leader and best player on defense. Without his presence in the second level of their defense, Oklahoma State will be prone to conceding gaps in coverage as well as losing a productive run-stopper in the middle. That gives Utah a higher chance of sustaining drives down the field, getting more opportunities to combat against a Cowboys defense who ranks seventh overall in Def Finishing Drives.

With the Cowboys' defense in a position to struggle, it will be on the backs of their offense to stay within the Utes scoring pace. They certainly look capable of doing just that after last week’s routing against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, yet Utah’s defense is a major step up in the quality of the opponent.
More intriguing yet, Oklahoma State’s offense has actually struggled to generate rush production as they enter week four ranked 122nd in Rush Success Rate and 98th in Rush PPA. A shockingly bad metric for a unit that includes star running back Ollie Gordon II, yet the former Heisman award contender has been held to just 3.5 yards per carry. His struggles with churning out yards past the trenches will be poised to continue as Utah’s front seven ranks 37th in Def Rush Success Rate.
With Ollie Gordon potentially bottled up, Oklahoma State’s offense will have to rely on a heavier dose of the pass to move the ball down the field. While the Cowboys have excelled through the air as they rank 26th or better in Pass Success Rate and PPA, they face a Utah secondary that ranks equally as well in defending against it. With no path for consistent offensive production, expect Utah to create a scoring pace too fast for the Cowboys to keep up with.
