#5 Gonzaga vs. #4 Kansas Prediction and Odds

Gonzaga Bulldogs

Gonzaga didn’t win the WCC regular season or tournament title this weekend, but they have won ten of their previous 11 games. The Zags dominated the WCC but dropped two of their three games to St. Mary’s, struggling to solve their elite defense. That led to some doubting their ability to beat a McNeese State team that was fifth in the country in opponent scoring. Gonzaga put those doubts to rest by dominating the Cowboys 86-65.

The Zags' impressive victory puts them in a great position to return to the Sweet 16. They will now face a Kansas team missing one of the country’s top players: Kevin McCullar Jr. His absence not only takes away the Jayhawks’ top scorer but also one of their best defenders. The Zags’ offense was overwhelming against a top-ranked defense on Thursday, and we see them repeat that today.

Kansas Jayhawks

The Jayhawks barely survived a late collapse against Samford on Thursday, benefiting from a bad foul call to seal the win. While they were able to lock in the win, they struggled to close the game without Kevin McCullar Jr. While center Hunter Dickinson is a dangerous weapon and prolific scorer, the Jayhawks don’t have enough depth behind him. That means they’ll need to find a way to slow Gonzaga’s devastating offense if they want to advance to the Sweet 16.

The good news for Kansas is that Dickinson gives them a significant advantage down low. The Zags attempted the second-fewest threes in the WCC this season, which should help offset McCullar's loss on the perimeter. The biggest question will be whether Kansas has the depth to keep this game close. Even if Dickinson and the rest of the defense can limit the Zags down low, they’ll still need to find a way to generate offense against a Bulldogs team, allowing 68.8 PPG.

#5 Gonzaga vs. #4 Kansas Pick

This is the easiest bet of the entire weekend. Kansas needed an awful foul call at the end to seal their first-round win. While Samford is a good team, the narrow win showed how much Kansas misses McCullar. Samford and Gonzaga are in the top ten in scoring in the nation, meaning things won’t get easier for Kansas. Unlike Samford, the Zags are also great on defense, which will lead to a different outcome for Kansas today.

The Zags offense will overwhelm the Jayhawks today while their defense focuses on containing Dickinson. This game may stay close in the first half, but Kansas doesn’t have the depth to keep up for a full 40 minutes.
