19 teams have entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in at least one poll and went on to win the national championship
Only one runner-up won the national championship the following season (Louisiana Tech was the runner-up in '87 and won the title in '88).
Iowa ended South Carolina's perfect season last year with a 77-73 win in the Final Four;
It looks like women's college basketball will get the championship game it wanted. South Carolina will face Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ABC/ESPN/ESPN+. The Gamecocks opened as 6.5-point favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook.
With a win, South Carolina will become the tenth NCAAW team to win a national championship with an undefeated record. Should Iowa win, it will be the program's first national title and a fitting send-off for Caitlin Clark.
If the Final Four games showed us anything, it was this—there is no telling how this game will play out. Solid arguments can be made for either team to win, making this a great game to bet on after signing up with one of our top March Madness sportsbooks and claiming their welcome offer:

Iowa fans are happy to see their team back in the national championship game, but how they got there was unexpected. While Caitlin Clark pulled through for the team in the end, it was Hannah Stuelke and the defense that saved the day.
Stuelke kept the offense afloat for much of the game while Clark struggled to make her shots. The defense kept the game close for three quarters; the score was tied at 51 apiece heading into the final quarter.
And then Caitlin Clark took over.
It will be much harder to overcome a deficit against a South Carolina team with a much more potent offense and defense than UConn. Iowa will need Clark to have a rebound game like she did in the LSU game (9-20 from three-point range, 41 points) after a rough outing vs. Colorado (3-11 from three-point range, 29 points).
It could be a long day for Hawkeye fans if Clark struggles again. When Iowa faced South Carolina in the Final Four last year, Clark was 5-17 from three-point range but scored 41 points.
For a brief time during the first half of South Carolina’s Final Four game vs. NC State, it looked like the Gamecocks might have a fight on their hands. They trailed the Wolfpack for the second half of the first period before tying the game up at 16-16.
NC State hung around in the second and trailed by just one at the half. But then South Carolina took care of business with a 29-6 third period and never looked back. In the end, the game was a lot like every other one they had this season, with the defense holding NC State to less than 60 points.
The offense fell short of its season average (85.6 ppg) with 78.
When the Gamecocks play like they did in the second half (and especially the third period), no one can beat them. They are that rare team that plays very well on both ends of the court, and when they bring their ‘A’ game, they win no matter who they are facing.
But if they do not bring their best right from the start, and Caitlin Clark and Iowa do, the Hawkeyes could build a lead that even South Carolina’s incredibly talented team can’t overcome.
PICK: Under 161 (-110) at DraftKings
This contest is such a challenging game to pick a winner for. South Carolina looks like the better team on paper, but that was the case last year. Last season they had a top-ten offense and defense while Iowa had the No. 1 offense and a defense ranked No. 321.
We are leaning towards taking Iowa and the points, but if Clark struggles and/or the South Carolina defense clamps down hard, the game could get ugly.
The UConn game and last season’s Final Four game prove the Iowa defense can step up in the clutch. South Carolina’s defense has come through all season for the Gamecocks. This matchup will not be a defensive battle, but it will not turn into a shootout.
