  • Utah State upset TCU to advance to the second round

  • The winner of this game advances to the Sweet 16 in the Midwest Region

The Purdue Boilermakers will face the Utah State Aggies on Sunday. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 in the Midwest Region.

Purdue is the top seed in the Midwest with a 30-4 record. They defeated Grambling 78-50 in the first round, which should give them a lot of confidence based on their recent tournament history.

Utah State cruised past TCU as a slight underdog. They aren’t as talented as the Boilermakers, but they have a lot of momentum after their 16-point victory.

Here, we will break down the Utah State vs. Purdue game and give our best bets for the action.

Utah State vs. Purdue Prediction and Odds

Utah State Aggies

Utah State entered the NCAA Tournament as an eight seed but made a massive statement in the first round. The Aggies took down TCU 88-72 as a 3.5-point underdog.

The Horned Frogs didn’t play their best game, but Utah State made them make mistakes. The Aggies 88 point statement should help give them confidence as they face the top seeded Boilermakers.

Utah State is a very experienced team, which makes them dangerous. Multiple players can take shots in high-leverage situations. The Aggies were led by Ian Martinez in the first round.

His consistency has fluctuated, but he dropped 21 points against TCU while shooting 55.6% from the field. Martinez also added four rebounds and four assists in the win.

The other player to watch for the Aggies is Great Osobor. Osobor is a massive presence in the paint who will match up with Zach Eddey.

Osobor has averaged 17.8 points with 9.1 rebounds per game this season. He had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the first round. If he plays a great game, it will set Utah State up to be competitive.

Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue is one of the favorites to win the National Championship, and they have one of the best rosters in the country. However, they have terrible luck in March, and they’re always hard to trust.

Since 2021, they have been eliminated from a 13, 15, and a 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They hit rock bottom last season, losing as a top seed to #16 Fairleigh Dickinson.

Only two #1 seeds in history have lost to #16 in NCAA History, so this was a shocking upset. For the Boilermakers to win the title, they need Eddey to play like the national player of the year.

Eddey leads the team in points and rebounds. He scores 24.6 points and 12 rebounds per contest. He had 30 points and 21 rebounds in 31 minutes against Grambling.

Utah State vs. Purdue Pick

Utah State has a lot of momentum heading into this contest and they’re getting 10.5 points. This is a significant margin, but it’s nothing Purdue can’t cover.

The Boilermakers have struggled enough in the NCAA Tournament over the years. They have a significant advantage in the KenPom Ratings, and they’re on a mission. Lay the points with the Boilermakers as we don’t expect any upsets in this contest.
