Odds, Preview, Picks, and Best Bets for Marquette vs UConn

In two previous matchups this season, the Golden Eagles and the Huskies shared the spoils with each team winning on their home court. The Golden Eagles escaped with an 82-76 win in January while the Huskies led almost wire-to-wire in a convincing 87-72 win in February.

Of course, it’s worth noting that the February road game against the Huskies was the only game Marquette has lost since January 15. Shake Smart’s team has won 12 of its last 13 games, catapulting the Golden Eagles to no. 6 in the polls late in the season. However, Marquette is a little fortunate to be in the Big East semifinals after they had to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit and an overtime barnburner against St. John’s on Thursday. In fact, four of their last six games have been decided by two points or less despite the Golden Eagles winning all of them.

Despite their recent stretch of close games, the Golden Eagles have been led all season by one of the most dynamic offenses in the country. Marquette ranks eighth nationally in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency. They average 81 points and 18 assists per game, sharing the ball exceptionally well, especially Tyler Kolek, who is the team’s second-leading scorer and also dishes out 7.9 assists per game. Meanwhile, his backcourt mate Kam Jonas averages 15.3 points per game while shooting close to 37% from three-point range.

As for the Huskies, they also closed out the season on a hot streak, winning nine of 10 games heading into Friday’s semifinal. A three-point road loss against Creighton is UConn’s only loss during that stretch. The catch is they’ve won many of those games by wide margins whereas Marquette has played close games. Of their last nine wins, seven have come by at least nine points.

Much like Marquette, the Huskies are efficient offensively, ranking 10th nationally in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency. But while the Golden Eagles are led by guards, UConn’s leading scorer is forward Adama Sanogo, who averages 16.9 points per game. However, sophomore guard Jordan Hawkins isn’t far behind at 16.4 points per game while both Tristen Newton and Andre Jackson average over four assists per game, giving the Huskies a balanced attack that shares the ball.

If there is a difference between these teams, it could be on the defensive end. The Huskies are 15th nationally in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency, far better than the Golden Eagles. They’ve held four of their last seven opponents under 60 points and will be comfortable playing a low-scoring game while also having the firepower to compete in a shootout. That could make UConn the team to beat in Friday’s Big East Tournament semifinal, even against a red-hot Marquette team.
