Mexico accumulated maximum points in Group A to advance in first place. Ecuador, meanwhile, qualified for the round of 32 by finishing third in Group E. This promises to be an intriguing encounter in the first knockout round.
According to the latest World Cup odds, Mexico is the favorite to win this last-32 tie, but Ecuador is capable of causing the World Cup co-host a few problems.

Below are our three top tips for Mexico vs. Ecuador, including two straight bets and one same game parlay.
Tie
It has been a good start to the World Cup for the co-hosts, with the USA, Mexico and Canada all reaching the round of 32. Now the serious business starts, and while the USA and Canada will be quietly pleased with their opponents for the first knockout round, Mexico faces a tougher test against Ecuador. The South American nation played well in the group stage, even though it advanced only as a third-place finisher. It has what it takes to force extra time against Mexico, despite the fact the latter has home advantage at the Estadio Azteca.
Under 2.5 Goals
This promises to be an absorbing encounter in Mexico City, but it will not necessarily be a goal-laden one. Ecuador is much stronger defensively than it is going forward. It failed to score in two of its three group games, but it conceded only two goals against Ivory Coast, Curacao and Germany. In South American qualifying, it gave up just five goals in 18 matches - the fewest of all 10 sides. This Mexico team is not blessed with top-class talent in forward areas, so it too will lean on a backline which has yet to concede at this World Cup.
Mexico to Qualify and Under 1.5 Mexico Goals
As we discussed above, Mexico’s attack will have to work hard to create chances against this mean Ecuador defense. Sebastian Beccacece’s team is used to battling attackers like Vinicius Junior and Lionel Messi in World Cup qualifying in South America, so it will not be daunted by the prospect of facing Raul Jimenez and co. In the end, though, we expect Mexico to edge this tie, a hard-fought result that could have a major impact on the Mexico odds to win World Cup futures market. But El Tri will have to settle for victory in extra time or on penalties, perhaps after scoring just once in the first 90 minutes.
This is not the greatest Mexico roster of all time. It contains very few players playing at the highest level in Europe. Raul Jimenez, now 35, will be in England’s second division next season. Luis Romo, Roberto Alvarado and the 17-year-old wonderkid Gilberto Mora play in Liga MX. Julian Quinones is an employee of Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League.
Expectations were therefore mixed before the big kick-off, but the group stage went as well as it realistically could for Mexico. It was one of only three teams to finish on nine points courtesy of victories over South Africa (2-0), South Korea (1-0) and Czechia (3-0). As those scorelines show, Mexico did not concede a single goal in Group A.
Javier Aguirre is an astute head coach and the decision to reappoint him in 2024 for a third spell in charge of the national team has proved to be a wise one. He has created a collective which was more than the sum of its parts in the group stage, but Mexico is still under pressure to go further at what continues to be a home tournament for El Tri.
It was a dramatic group stage for Ecuador. The South American side held its own against Ivory Coast on matchday one, only to be hit with a late sucker punch when Amad Diallo scored the only goal of the game in the 90th minute. It then battered down Curacao’s defense in its second outing, but wasteful finishing saw that match finish 0-0.
As a result, the knockout stage essentially came early for Ecuador. It headed into its third group game against Germany knowing that anything other than a win would have sent it home. It got off to the worst possible start, conceding the opening goal in the second minute (albeit in controversial circumstances). But the players did not let their heads drop, and Ecuador came from behind to win 2-1.
Sebastian Beccacece’s side seems to prefer being the underdog, as it was in that clash with four-time World Cup winner Germany. Ecuador will not mind one bit that Mexico is the favorite to win this last-32 clash.
The evidence of the group stage suggests Mexico and Ecuador are both better defensive outfits than they are offensive ones. Mexico conceded zero goals in Group A, while Ecuador’s backline was breached on just two occasions in Group E. This will be a tight game between two teams that do not give much away.
Mexico has home advantage after topping its group. It is unbeaten in nine World Cup games at the legendary Estadio Azteca, which hosted matches in 1970 and 1986 as well as this summer. It will have the backing of almost every fan inside the ground, although the altitude factor will not be as significant here. Many Ecuadorian players grew up in such conditions, with the capital Quito 2,850 metres above sea level - higher than Mexico City at 2,240 metres.
The first goal will be crucial here. Going ahead would allow the scoring side to sit a little deeper and play on the counter-attack. Yet it would not be a huge surprise if we did not see the first goal until extra time - or perhaps in the penalty shoot-out.
