Below are our three top tips for Switzerland vs. Algeria, including two straight bets and one same game parlay.
Johan Manzambi Anytime Goalscorer
Johan Manzambi began the World Cup as a substitute, but his starring role as a second-half substitute in the 4-1 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina saw the attacking midfielder force his way into the thinking of Switzerland manager Murat Yakin. Manzambi scored a brace in that defeat of Bosnia & Herzegovina and he was also on the scoresheet in the subsequent 2-1 victory over Canada. Only five players were more prolific than Manzambi in the group stage, and the Freiburg man will also pose a significant threat to the Algeria backline in this round of 32 clash.
Over 2.5 Goals
Algeria needed a point on matchday three of the group stage to secure its place in the round of 32, and that is exactly what it got from its meeting with Austria. That game finished 3-3, which means Algeria’s games in Group J contained a total of 12 goals - which works out at four per match on average. Note, too, that there were at least three goals in two of Switzerland’s group games. With all that in mind, this promises to be an entertaining encounter featuring over 2.5 goals.
Switzerland to Win and Both teams to Score
Switzerland is yet to draw a blank at this World Cup, while Algeria scored in two of its three group games. Argentina was the only team to deny it a goal, but Switzerland is not as strong a side as the defending world champion. Algeria showed plenty of quality in forward areas against Jordan and Austria, so it will back itself to find the back of the net in this fixture. Overall, though, Switzerland is the more balanced team and we like its chances of reaching the round of 16 at the expense of Algeria.
Switzerland was in cruise control for much of its opening game against Qatar. Breel Embolo gave the European nation the lead in the 17th minute, making no mistake from the penalty spot after a contentious decision to give it a spot-kick. Switzerland continued to rack up chances thereafter, but it failed to score a second and was hit with a sucker punch deep into second-half stoppage time, when Qatar notched an unlikely equalizer.
That was undoubtedly a blow, but Switzerland dusted itself down and made up for that lapse in its next two games. It had to be patient against Bosnia & Herzegovina, but eventually its superior quality made the difference in a 4-1 win. Next, it beat Canada 2-1 to take top spot in Group B, allowing it to continue playing in the Great White North at the start of the knockout phase.
Switzerland is a solid tournament team these days, having grown accustomed to competing at a World Cup or European Championship every two years. It has a settled side which has been coached by Murat Yakin since 2021, so every player knows exactly what is expected of him. Switzerland is a potential dark horse to reach the latter stages.
Algeria got its World Cup campaign off to a disappointing start, losing 3-0 to Argentina on matchday one. It was never going to be easy against the defending champion, not least because Lionel Messi delivered an exceptional display on the day, but Algeria will have been disappointed that it did not manage to lay a glove on Lionel Scaloni’s team throughout the game.
Algeria needed to respond in its second game, so its fans must have feared the worst when it went 1-0 down to Jordan. But Algeria steadied itself and hit back with two second-half goals to win 2-1. It was then involved in a surprisingly dramatic match against Austria last time out, with a 3-3 tie sending both sides through to the round of 32.
This is only Algeria’s second appearance in the knockout stage of a World Cup. It memorably gave eventual champion Germany a tough game in the round of 16 in 2014, eventually losing after extra time. Algeria is now seeking to reach that stage of the competition once again, but it is the underdog in this clash with Switzerland.
Switzerland is a cohesive, well-coached side. It helps that the core of the team has been together for years now, giving it a continuity that other national teams lack. It likes to build up the play from the back and dominate possession, although Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi provide a counter-attack threat if Switzerland decides to drop deeper.
Algeria pressed high up the pitch against Jordan and Austria, but it understandably took a more measured approach in its meeting with Argentina. It will look to put Switzerland’s defenders under pressure when they try to play out, but its principal out-of-possession task will be to shut down Granit Xhaka, the man who sets the tempo of Switzerland’s play.
Riyad Mahrez is Algeria’s most famous player, but the key man at this World Cup is Ibrahim Maza. A technically gifted playmaker, Maza has a knack for finding space between the lines and wriggling out of tight areas. If Switzerland can shut the gifted 20-year-old down, it will greatly increase its chances of success in the round of 32.
