Angels vs Rangers Predictions
These two teams are heading in very different directions, which will lead to another big win for Texas tonight. Jon Gray will hold this weak Angels offense in check, allowing the Rangers' elite lineup to do a lot of damage against a struggling young starter. Look for this one to get out of control early, leading to the Rangers cruising to a multi-run win.
Los Angeles Angels Predictions
The Angels arguably had the worst trade deadline of any team. Not only did they fail to move Ohtani, but they instead gave up some pieces to make a run. While that added some excitement for the fanbase, it may have set this organization back a decade. Their front office’s poor decision cost the Angels as they lost seven straight games following the trade deadline. The Angels were outscored 23-8 by the Astros in a series loss over the weekend, and we don’t see that changing tonight against a Rangers team that shut them out 12-0 in the series opener.
The Angels will send Reid Detmers (2-9, 5.27 ERA) to the mound tonight. The 24-year-old has been miserable over the last month and has allowed seven runs in each of his previous two starts. In fact, he has not made it past the fifth inning since July 15 and owns a 6.70 ERA on the road. Look for him to struggle again, likely earning him a trip back down to AAA.
This Angels offense doesn't have many weapons, with Taylor Ward, Mike Trout, and Anthony Rendon all out. While Ohtani is one of the best hitters in baseball, there just isn’t enough support for this team to win games. Adding CJ Cron and Randal Grichuk has done more harm than good so far, and it will provide Jon Gray with one of his easiest starts of the season.
Texas Rangers Predictions
The Rangers continue to hold on to the AL West lead thanks partly to an eight-game winning streak that ended last week. They followed it with an impressive series win against the Giants and now will be looking to push the Angels further down the AL West standings. That shouldn’t be hard to do with Jon Gray on the mound for the Rangers, who will contain the Angels enough to lead to a lopsided Rangers win.
Speaking of Jon Gray (8-5, 3.65 ERA), the veteran is having a very nice season for the Rangers. His current ERA is the lowest of his career, and his WHIP (1.19) is the second-lowest. Gray has struggled over the last month but snapped out of it in his previous start against the Giants. The 31-year-old held the Giants scoreless over seven innings, allowing just two hits and zero walks. The struggling Angels offense won’t present more of a challenge this week, so look for Gray to post another quality start at home tonight.
The Rangers' offense continues to be among the best in the league. They are second in the league in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and runs scored. They trail only the Braves in each category, meaning they are the best in the AL. Watch Corey Seager tonight, as he will have another monster game as he continues a fantastic 2023 campaign. The shortstop has five home runs and ten RBIs this month, and we see him adding those totals against Detmers.
