This isn’t a price we are usually willing to take when giving up runs, but tonight’s bet is too good to pass up. That is mainly due to the poor play of the White Sox, who appear to have checked out for the remainder of the season. With most of their top prospects remaining in the minors this September, there is no reason to believe they will turn things around.
The White Sox aren’t just losing, they are losing badly. Thirteen of their previous 15 losses have been by more than one run, with just two wins during that run. Their struggles are primarily due to their lineup, which has an OPS of .595 since the All-Star break.
The Sox lineup will face a stiff challenge today with Matthew Boyd (2-1, 2.20 ERA, 0.77 WHIP) on the mound for Cleveland. The 33-year-old debuted with the team on August 13 and has been fantastic since. He is coming off his most impressive start, where he held the Dodgers to one run on three hits and no walks over six innings on the road.
The White Sox will have Davis Martin (0-3, 3.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) starting this afternoon. The righty has been solid this season and could find some success against a struggling Cleveland offense, but it won’t matter. The combination of an awful bullpen and lineup means he will receive little support, which is why the team has lost all eight of his starts this year. Only one of those losses were within one run.

The Giants are struggling to get wins down the stretch, but they are set up to add one tonight. That is because they will have ace Blake Snell (2-3, 3.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) on the mound. The veteran missed much of the season with an injury, but he is coming off a fantastic August, going 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA across six starts.
Snell will be facing a Brewers lineup that has been struggling of late. They are batting .240 since the All-Star break compared to .255 leading up to it. While Jackson Chourio’s breakout has helped, the team continues to miss former NL MVP winner Christian Yelich.
Milwaukee will have Colin Rea (12-4, 3.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP) starting opposite Snell. The 34-year-old has the best season of his career, but he has begun to fall apart lately. His last three starts have been especially rough, posting an ERA of 5.70 and a WHIP of 1.40. Those three starts came against the Cardinals, Reds, and A’s.
The Giants’ lineup has been a disappointment this season, but even they are capable of beating up a struggling Rea. They have been far more impressive at home, posting a batting average of .248, far above their road average of .231.
