Opening Day is finally here and with it comes non-stop baseball action for the next six months. To make the return of baseball even more fun, you can wager on if there will be a run in the first inning (YRFI). Within six total outs, you can potentially win money before even needing to take a bathroom break.

FanDuel Sportsbook has been a mainstay for the YRFI market, normally being the first to release lines for this prop. FanDuel is also giving new users $200 in bonus bets for simply signing up and winning their first wager of at least $5. For more information about FanDuel and their new user promotion, you can read it here.

Washington Nationals vs. Cincinnati Reds - Josiah Gray vs. Frankie Montas (4:10 PM EST)

Over 0.5 Run (-106) at FanDuel

The Cincinnati Reds were one of the most fun teams to watch last year with their young batting lineup, a lineup that featured elite batting production from top to bottom. Focusing in on their projected top four alone, the Reds can stack them up with the best of them outside of the Dodgers top of the order.

Jonathan India, Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, and Jake Fraley all possess a blend of contact hitting and power, now getting the opportunity to get hot out of the gate against a regressing Josiah Gray. Gray has struggled with keeping runners off the bases and has failed to look any better after finishing spring training with an ERA of 6.61.

The Walk Rate is especially intriguing as a big part of the Reds' offensive success comes from their base running. India is lightning quick and Elly De La Cruz has already posted base-stealing highlights early in his career. If one of them gets on early, they are already in a great position to score. Especially if Gray is forced to get aggressive to avoid more base runners, getting punished by the Reds' elite contact hitters.

On the other side, the Reds' pitching has been a major issue. This is a big reason why they are projected to finish in the middle of the NL Central, yet a factor that they may be able to overcome as noted on the NL Central Futures Page.

In this game alone, Frankie Montas brings a lot of intrigue as he makes his regular-season return after taking some time off for shoulder surgery. The rust was apparent during spring training as he finished with a 5.94 ERA. The Nationals lineup as a whole may be underwhelming, but CJ Abrams and Lane Thomas are more than capable of taking Montas yard if he continues to look rusty.

New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros - Nestor Cortes vs. Framber Valdez (4:10 PM EST)

Over 0.5 Run (-112) at Bet Rivers

The New York Yankees have struggled with the injury bug in their 2023 campaign and have been struck once again with the breaking news of Gerrit Cole having to miss time due to an injury. Cole has arguably been the best in the league after a dominant Cy Young season, now leaving the Yankees void of a true ace to start their year and an opening for someone else in the AL to win the Cy Young.

With Cole absent, the Yankees turn to Nestor Cortes for Opening Day pitching duties. While Cortes made massive strides in his pitching production over the past few years, he mightily regressed in spring training. Take his results with a grain of salt as it is a small sample size, but his 7.71 ERA in four games certainly raised eyebrows.

It’s certainly enough for me to think the Astros can take advantage of his potential regression as Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman are a formidable starting batting lineup. Especially with a healthy Alvarez back in the fold after he missed some time last season due to an injury.

As for the Yankees, they face Framber Valdez who posted eerily similar numbers in spring training as his opposing pitcher Nestor Cortes. Valdez finished the month throwing a 7.71 ERA and WHIP of 1.929. His walk rate will be tested against newly acquired Yankee Juan Soto who excels at keeping at-bats alive. Factor in Aaron Judge playing behind Soto and Valdez will be forced to be hyper-aggressive to try and keep them off the bases to his own potential demise.
