This is a strange sentence to type, but we love the over because of Sandy Alcantara. The 2022 NL Cy Young winner has been terrible this season and will now face a stacked Toronto lineup. Conversely, we have a Marlins offense has been playing their best baseball of the season. The league's top hitter, Luis Arraez, leads them and has been providing the rest of the lineup with plenty of RBI chances. We see a high-scoring battle that easily eclipses the 7-run mark.
The Blue Jays (40-35) had high expectations coming into 2023 but have not lived up to them so far. While they boast an impressive lineup and rotation, they still sit 11.5 games behind the AL-East-leading Rays. The Jays were able to eke out a 2-0 win last night, breaking the Marlins' five-game win streak and their own three-game losing streak. The win will help boost them today as they face the Marlins struggling ace on the mound.
The Blue Jays feature one of the best young lineups in the league, but they have been leaving too many runners on base. While they rank sixth in the league in batting average (.262), they are fourteenth in RBIs (313). A big reason for that has been their lack of power, but that has not been as big of an issue on the road. They have been hitting far more home runs away from Toronto, which will spell trouble for the struggling Sandy Alcantara.
Our Jays player to watch today is Vladimir Guerrero Jr (.279 BA, 9 HR, 42 RBI). The first baseman has struggled in June and has just one home run so far this month. We like his chances to break out of this slump today against Alcantara for two reasons. One is that Guerrero is 5-7 against the Marlins’ starter in his career. The second is that he owns a .308 batting average and has hit all his home runs on the road in 2023. Look for Guerrero to get hot and lead Toronto to a big offensive night.
The Marlines (42-32) have been one of the biggest surprise stories in 2023. Despite their ace dealing with a significant regression this season, they are still ten games over the .500 mark and have the third-best winning percentage (.568) in the NL. Miami’s record is a bit inflated due to their easy schedule in June, but they have shown that their offense is a force to be reckoned with. They are eighth in the league in batting average (2.60), and their home run and RBI totals are quickly improving. While Jays starter Kevin Gausman (6-3, 3.01 ERA) is having a great season, the Marlins own a combined .388 batting average against him, and we see that number going up today.
Sandy Alcantara (2-5, 4.97 ERA) will be starting for Toronto, which is another reason we love this bet. The 2022 Cy Young winner has just two quality starts in his last seven games, both of which came against bad offenses. Alcantara has been able to work deep into games but has a habit of getting himself into trouble late. Now he’ll face a Blue Jays lineup with some of the best young hitters in baseball, which will lead to another ugly stat line for the embattled ace.
Our player to watch is Luis Arraez (.398 BA, 2 HR, 345 RBI), who has been the best hitter in the league this season. As impressive as his average is, it has been even better at home (.437). Arraez has gone 5-5 at the plate in two of his last three games, including last night against the Jays. The Marlins' second baseman has a .833 average against Kevin Gausman, which has us locked into the over tonight.
