#3 Baylor vs. #6 Clemson Prediction and Odds

Baylor Bears

Baylor has been a mystery this season. While they started 9-0 with wins against Auburn and Florida, they went 11-7 in the Big 12. The conference was arguably the best in the country, but the Bears lost some ugly games and went 4-4 over their last eight games heading into the tournament.

One big reason for some of the Bears’ tough losses is their defense. They finished tenth in the Big 12 in opponent scoring, allowing 71.1 points per game this season. Baylors’ offense (80.9 PPG) has helped cover up those deficiencies. The good news is that they’ll face a Clemson team tonight that is built the same way, promising a high-scoring thriller.

Baylor's biggest advantage tonight is its scoring depth. They have a whopping six players who average over ten points per game this season. The depth means that the Bears can overcome off days from one or two of their top scorers, something very few teams can do.

Clemson Tigers

Clemson had a tough draw in the first round as they matched up against a red-hot New Mexico team. Many believed the Lobos could make a big run in the tournament, but the Tigers blew them out 77-56. The game was never really close, giving Clemson a major statement win heading into today’s game.

While Baylor will likely present more of a challenge, Clemson’s win over New Mexico shows they are up to it. The Lobos were another team that relied on elite scoring to compensate for poor defense. The Tigers held them to just 56 points, the Lobos lowest point total of the season. Like Baylor, New Mexico’s scoring comes from various players, but Clemson was able to contain them. If Clemson can replicate that defensive effort, they will be incredibly hard to beat today.

While Clemson doesn’t have the scoring depth enjoyed by Baylor, PJ Hall and Joseph Girard III are more deadly than anything on the Bears roster. Hall leads the team with 18.7 points per game, making 49.3% of his shots. Girard is one of the best three-point shooters in the country, making 41.9% of his 234 attempts.

#3 Baylor vs. #6 Clemson Pick

While we think Clemson could pull off the win, we are far more certain of the overhit. Both of these teams are prolific on offense and sluggish on defense. While they both managed to hold their opponents to under 60 points in the first round, expect a major correction today.

Baylor’s scoring depth will lead to a lot of points, but they will struggle to contain Girard from three. They were ninth in the SEC at defending the three-point shot (33.6%), which will lead to many points for Clemson.
