  • Creighton beat Oregon 86-73 in double OT to advance to Sweet 16

  • Tennessee beat Texas 62-58 to punch their Sweet 16 ticket

  • The winner of Creighton vs. Tennessee will face Purdue or Gonzaga

Creighton and Tennessee will battle in the second of two Sweet 16 games from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Both teams are in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament, and the winner of this game will face either Purdue or Gonzaga in the Elite 8.

Creighton survived Oregon 86-73 in double overtime to punch their Sweet 16 ticket. The Bluejays caught multiple breaks throughout the 50 minutes of play to advance.

Tennessee also had a challenging game against Texas in the Sweet. However, the second-seeded Volunteers still found a way to win on a day when they didn’t play their best basketball.

Here, we will preview Creighton vs. Tennessee and give our best bet for the matchup.

Creighton vs. Tennesse Prediction and Odds

Creighton Bluejays

Creighton was one of the best teams in the Big East all season. They beat UConn at the end of the regular season, and Seton Hall was the only other team in the conference to upset the country’s best team.

However, the Bluejays didn’t carry their end-of-season success into the Big East Tournament. Providence defeated them in the quarterfinal, so they only played one game in the conference tournament.

The loss didn’t hurt their seeding as they stayed on the three-line in the NCAA Tournament. The Bluejays have a well-rounded team with many star players but are not very physical.

If their game against Tennessee comes down to rebounds and second-chance scoring opportunities, the Volunteers have the advantage.

Baylor Scheierman is the player to watch for the Bluejays. The senior is scoring 18.3 points per game. His efficiency on the field has fluctuated, but he will be taking most of the shots against Tennessee.

For Creighton to win, they must win on the perimeter. When they beat UConn, they barely missed from three-point range, which is what it will take to dethrone Tennessee.

Tennessee Volunteers

The Volunteers revolve around All-American guard Dalton Knecht. Knecht is 6’6”, 204 points, and is one of the best players in the country.

His size, speed, and strength make him so tough to defend. As good as Knecht is, he has been relatively bad in his past few contests.

In the SEC Championship, where Tennessee lost by 17 points to Mississippi State, he shot 23.5% from the field. He played well in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against St. Peter’s but came up short against Texas.

Knecht shot 27.8% from the floor against the Longhorns. The Volunteers have multiple stars, but Knecht leads the charge. We expect him to be better against Creighton because they won’t match his physicality.

Creighton vs. Tennessee Pick

Creighton is a great team, and if they get hot from the floor, Tennessee’s chance of winning will be slim. However, stylistically, this game favors the Volunteers, the more physical team.

The Volunteers should have their way in the paint, which will make the game's ultimate difference. Lay the small spread with the Volunteers.
