The only downside to pulling off an upset like the Rebels did last year is that everyone sees them coming this time. A pair of talented seniors lead the way in Marquesha Davis (14.6 ppg and 4.8 rpg) and Madison Scott (12.4 ppg and 6.5 rpg).
At 23-8, their record is solid but unremarkable until you see who they have played. Their conference schedule included two of the best teams in the nation (South Carolina and LSU) and four additional teams that are going dancing (Oklahoma, Arizona, Michigan, and Louisville).
They went a combined 2-5 against those six teams, but they are battle-tested and ready for the competition they’ll see in March Madness, like Marquette.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start this season, going 12-0 and not losing until they faced UConn on New Year’s Eve (95-64). They lost four of their first eight conference games but ended the regular season winning four of their last five.
Marquette has a respectable defense (No. 65 in the nation at 59.3 ppg allowed; No. 153 in opposing field goal percentage at 39.9). However, the team’s strength is its efficient offense (No. 33 in field goal percentage at 45.08%). It will get tested by an Ole Miss defense holding teams to 37.7% field goal percentage.
The team is led by senior forward Liza Karlen, averaging 17.6 ppg, 7.7 rpg, and shooting 50.4% from the floor. Fellow senior Jordan King averages 13 ppg, and sophomore Mackenzie Hare chips in 14.1 ppg.
Ole Miss will win, but it is hard to say whether they’ll cover the spread. Ole Miss is the better defensive team, but not by much. Marquette is the better offensive team, but also not by much. Neither team allows 60 ppg, and we don’t see either team scoring more than that.
