San Diego State vs. #13 Yale Prediction and Odds

San Diego State Aztecs

The Aztecs come into tonight’s matchup after a close win over UAB in the first round. They withstood a monster second-half effort from the Blazers in the win, avoiding an upset at the hands of a fellow mid-major. While they were far from perfect, their defense allowed them to get the win and keep their postseason going.

SDSU’s ability to play elite difference led them to last year’s Nation Championship game, but it has dropped off slightly this year. They are still a very good defense but were elite during last season’s NCAA Tournament run.

While the slight dropoff on defense is concerning, they have vastly improved in the offseason. Last season’s team lacked a true top scorer, but that's changed with Jason LeDee’s breakout season. The senior averaged just 7.9 points last season, but that jumped to 21.4 in his final year. LeDee was a big reason for their win on Friday, dropping 32 points and posting straight rebounds. He is averaging 28.2 points per game in the four games since the regular season ended.

Yale Bulldogs

The Bulldogs pulled a tough first-round matchup against Auburn, but they were able to pull off the upset win. Though they trailed for almost the entire game, Yale made a push with just over two minutes left that swung the game in their favor. Auburn was a great team that played in one of the country’s top conferences, showing us how dangerous this team is.

As impressive as the win was, the Bulldogs should have lost the game at the end. The Bulldogs showed their inexperience in big games when they committed two fouls while up two points with less than nine seconds left. Auburn missed all the free throws but managed an offensive rebound to set up one last three-point attempt. While Yale got the win, Auburn was the one that handed it to them at the end.

The biggest question today will be if Yale can solve the SDSU defense. They’ll need guard John Poulakidas to find a way to score, as his 28 points were the difference for the Bulldogs against Auburn. If Yale wants to make it to the Sweet 16, they’ll need him to have another strong game.

#5 San Diego State vs. #13 Yale Pick

This is one of our favorite bets of the weekend. Yale did an incredible job against Auburn, but they had the advantage of entering as an unknown underdog. That helped them catch the Tigers off guard, but that won’t happen tonight.

Yale should have lost their first-round matchup with Auburn through their mistakes at the end, and we see those mental mistakes costing them big time against the Aztecs.
