To learn more about how to bet on soccer, we have put together a useful guide covering all the must-know information.
Tottenham Hotspur have only lost one Premier League game so far this season, but that defeat came in the game that matters most. Spurs were beaten 3-1 by their arch-rivals Arsenal last weekend, falling four points adrift of top spot in the process. Many Tottenham fans would have settled for a return of five wins, two draws and one loss at the start of 2022/23, not least because the club had a dismal opening to last season. But it is hard to shake the feeling that Spurs have been underwhelming up to now.
Antonio Conte was critical of the refereeing at the Emirates Stadium last time out, but that does not disguise the fact that Spurs were second best throughout. They went in at half-time with the scores level having posed a few problems on the counter-attack in the opening 45 minutes, but Arsenal looked the more dangerous team from the first whistle. Emerson Royal’s red card shortly after the hour mark was undoubtedly damaging, but Tottenham were already 2-1 down by then and Arsenal looked the likelier scorers of the game’s fourth goal even before the Brazilian’s costly foul on Gabriel Martinelli.
Conte’s decision to stick with his usual 3-4-3 formation did not help; Tottenham were outnumbered in midfield and were unable to get a foothold in the game. And the absence through injury of Dejan Kulusevski was a blow. The visitors to the Emirates missed the Swede’s ball-carrying skills and his ability to link the midfield and the attack.
This was Tottenham’s second game of the season against a fellow big-six side. The first, a trip to Chelsea, ended 2-2, but Conte’s side were lucky to escape Stamford Bridge with a point. If Spurs want to challenge for the Premier League title, they need to raise their performance levels – not least in head-to-head clashes with teams that harbor similar ambitions.
Having a month without a fixture proved to be ideal timing for Brighton & Hove Albion. The side from the south coast of England had their manager Graham Potter poached by Chelsea last month, leaving them needing to find a replacement unexpectedly. Back-to-back postponements prior to the break for Nations League and other international matches therefore allowed the Seagulls to take their time in the search for a replacement.
The man they ultimately chose has a lofty reputation for his work at Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk, and Brighton fans will be excited for what lies ahead. Roberto De Zerbi’s start to life in the Premier League was not quite perfect, but a 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield must go down as an excellent result in the circumstances.
Brighton went 2-0 up in that match and played some brilliant football at times, and the point they collected was enough for Albion to maintain their position in the top four. No one at the Amex yet believes that Champions League qualification is a realistic goal, but there is certainly plenty of room for optimism. De Zerbi is about as good a manager as Brighton could have realistically attracted, so perhaps the exit of Potter need not be a season-defining event.
There are no suggestions that Conte is about to change shape for Saturday’s match, but the use of a 3-4-3 configuration would again leave his team outnumbered in midfield. De Zerbi is likely to line his charges up in a 3-5-2, but regardless of the exact formation Brighton have several players who tend to drop into central positions. That allows them to get their passing game going, with plenty of options for the player on the ball.
Brighton are full of confidence right now – and understandably so given their fantastic start to the campaign. They will look to take the game to Tottenham, who may have to soak up pressure for long periods of this contest before looking to break forward at speed on the counter-attack.
Each of the last three Premier League meetings between these sides have featured fewer than 2.5 goals, but we think this weekend’s encounter will buck the trend. Brighton appear to have improved their efficiency in the final third, despite not having a prolific center-forward in their ranks. Notching three goals against Liverpool at Anfield suggests Albion have the potential to ask serious questions of Spurs here.
But even though Tottenham’s performances have left a lot to be desired so far, it is notable that they have scored in 100 per cent of their Premier League outings. With that in mind, we reckon over 2.5 goals is the way to go in this one.
