Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction

Borussia Dortmund Must Bounce Back From Wolfsburg Loss

And that could be that. After the midweek round of fixtures in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich now have a four-point lead at the summit of the standings. Numerically, that is not a huge gap. Realistically, it is hard to see Bayern being caught from here. An 11th consecutive Bundesliga title is surely on its way to the Allianz Arena.

It is not just that Bayern were victorious in their last outing: Julian Nagelsmann’s side thrashed Werder Bremen 6-1 in one of their best displays of the campaign. In addition, Union Berlin, Freiburg, and Borussia Dortmund all failed to win. BVB slumped to a 2-0 defeat by Wolfsburg on Tuesday, leaving them sixth in the table and six points adrift of the top spot.

That was a disappointing defeat for Dortmund. They had won three straight matches in the league ahead of their trip to the Volkswagen Arena, and a victory there would have lifted them all the way up to the second spot. Instead, Edin Terzic’s side were outplayed by Wolfsburg and never looked like coming out on top.

Dortmund’s defense was continually prised open by Wolfsburg’s attack. Individual errors compounded their structural shortcomings. They did create chances at the other end, but wasteful finishing meant BVB failed to find the back of the net.

The best online sportsbooks already had Bayern down as strong favorites to finish on top of the pile, and the results in midweek have only strengthened their position. Dortmund are joint-second alongside RB Leipzig but both teams are priced at around +4000, illustrating how unlikely either side is to overhaul Bayern.

In fairness to BVB, sticking close to Nagelsmann’s men will always be difficult given the financial disparity between the clubs. Regardless, Dortmund have lost five of their 14 matches in the Bundesliga this term, which is too many even for a top-four candidate.

Borussia Monchengladbach Seem Unable to Find Consistency

Borussia Monchengladbach began the campaign with top-four ambitions. They finished 10th last term but it was clear that they had underachieved significantly; indeed, the previous season saw Gladbach reach the round of 16 of the Champions League.

The Foals might still be able to make a charge for fourth, but they have considerable ground to make up as the Bundesliga prepares to begin a two-month pause for the 2022 World Cup followed by the customary winter break. Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Dortmund, Gladbach sit ninth and are seven points behind fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.

Gladbach’s principal problem to date has been an inability to find consistency. Remarkably, they have not won back-to-back matches yet this term. Their last five games have brought three defeats, a draw, and a win. That sort of form does not exactly inspire confidence in their ability to overcome Borussia Dortmund on Friday.

Never mind the Champions League, if Gladbach want to qualify for the Europa League or the Europa Conference League they will need to become much more reliable. Scoring goals has not been an issue - only Bayern, Leipzig, and Frankfurt have found the net more often - but Gladbach’s defensive record is mid-ranking at best. None of their last seven outings has yielded a clean sheet.

Still, Gladbach are the type of team that are capable of beating virtually anyone in the Bundesliga on their day. That is why this contest is so intriguing since it is hard to know what to expect of both teams. One thing is for sure: Gladbach and Dortmund will both be keen to sign off on a high ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Goals on the Cards at Borussia Park in the First Game of Weekend

The fact that Gladbach and Dortmund are both liable to have drastic swings in performance from game to game means that it is probably best to steer clear of betting the moneyline on this occasion. Remember, there are plenty more betting options available to punters - check out our guide to how to bet on soccer if you would like to learn more about the various alternatives.

On this occasion, we think the goals market offers the most value. The price available for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals is not overly attractive, so our tip for Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund is more than 3.5 goals.

That bet would have paid out in five of Gladbach’s last seven matches. That shows how open Daniel Farke’s team tends to be, for better or for worse.

Dortmund are not quite as productive in attack as they were last season, which is no surprise given they lost Erling Haaland to Manchester City and the Premier League. But their speed in transition means they should be able to take advantage of Gladbach’s defensive frailties.

This will be the first game of the final weekend of Bundesliga action until 2023. If you only watch one match from Germany’s top flight, make it this one.
