Make no mistake: This is a big week for LIV Golf.
Twelve months ago, the rebel circuit prepared for the first Masters in the LIV era, and there was much talk in the game that their players would be underprepared.
Instead, Brooks Koepka very nearly won, he shared second with Phil Mickelson, and Patrick Reed was tied for fourth.
The players were fired up to prove their worth and they will be again this week, playing on a course that has proved to be a fine pointer for Augusta winners in the past.
Indeed, Doral hosted the PGA Tour up to 2016, and in the years 2012 to 2016 four of the five men who won the Masters had finished top three at Doral just weeks before.
Who will take the honors this week and join the favorites for the Masters? Let’s find out.
Year | Champion and Winning Score |
---|---|
2016 | Adam Scott (Australia) -12 |
2015 | Dustin Johnson (U.S.A.) -9 |
2014 | Patrick Reed (U.S.A.) -4 |
2013 | Tiger Woods (U.S.A.) -19 |
2012 | Justin Rose (England) -16 |
2011 | Nick Watney (U.S.A.) -16 |
2010 | Ernie Els (South Africa) -18 |
2009 | Phil Mickelson (U.S.A.) -19 |
2008 | Geoff Ogilvy (Australia) -17 |
2007 | Tiger Woods (U.S.A.) –10 |
The course is a par 72 that plays to 7,701 yards
It was a long-time host of the PGA Tour
Scoring is determined by wind strength
Water is a significant threat on 11 holes
It is a typical Florida resort course
There is Bermuda grass on the greens
Tiger Woods was a seven-time winner on the course
Two factors will continue to bug the Spaniard as he nears his defense of the green jacket. The first is that he had added no win since his triumph at Augusta National this time last year. The second is that in his four LIV starts he has been in the top five on the leaderboard with 18 holes to play and he is yet to improve on his position in the final round. Is it a coincidence or a trend?
There was no win last time out in Hong Kong for the red-hot Chilean but he carded a brilliant final round of 63 to finish fourth. It was his eighth top-10 finish in his last nine starts, a run that includes victories in the Australian Open, LIV Mayakoba, and LIV Jeddah. The only weakness in his case is an ordinary record in Florida: Just one top-20 (8th) in 12 starts in the Sunshine State.
The big-hitter is no stranger to success in Florida having finished first, second, and fourth at Bay Hill in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and third at TPC Sawgrass in THE PLAYERS Championship. Moreover, Bay Hill was designed by Dick Wilson who also created the Blue Monster. He finished sixth at LIV Hong Kong which was a third top 10 in a row.
The Spaniard has made 10 starts in Florida and he is yet to record a top-five finish but there are good reasons to believe that will change this week.
The main one is that when courses get longer, Rahm plays better.
Consider the evidence - all of these courses were over 7,600 yards:
The Earth Course at Jumeirah: Rahn’s made five starts and has five top-five finishes including three wins.
Torrey Pines in California: he’s made eight starts and has seven top-seven finishes including two wins.
Medinah, Kiawah Island, Congaree: he’s made one start on each of them and finished top-five every time.
Even his win at the Masters last year was on a layout stretched beyond 7,500 yards and he’ll be desperate to return to Augusta in the best of form.
Take the +650 for the win at bet365.
South Africa’s Dean Burmester is another golfer who has enjoyed the long test of the Earth Course at Jumeirah.
He was fourth there in both 2017 and 2018, sixth in 2021, and even his one “failure” was 14th in 2020.
He was a two-time winner on the DP World Tour before Christmas, opened the 2024 LIV season with third in Mayakoba, and was 9th last time out in Hong Kong.
The clincher is that he was third in LIV’s previous visit to Florida this time last year.
He’s an excellent each-way option (five places) at +2800 with Caesars Sportsbook.
Patrick Reed - aka Captain America - is a former course winner who might have been overlooked this week.
He won the Cadillac Championship, his first win on the PGA Tour, at Doral back in 2014 and it must surely hold fond memories for him.
He’s had a slow start to 2024 but was fourth last time out in the International Series Macau and was third alongside Bursmester this time last year in Florida.
Take him at +260 for a top 10 with bet365.
