The former AL rivals feature one of the best pitching matchups of the day. Both teams will have young arms on the mound as 24-year-old Garrett Crochet (5-5, 3.68 ERA, 0.93 WHIP) will face off against 25-year-old Robert Gasser 92-0, 1.96 ERA, 0.96 WHIP). Given how bad the Chicago lineup is and how impressive Grochet has pitched, we expect a low-scoring battle to unfold this afternoon.
Crochet has become one of Chicago’s best pitchers over the last three seasons. He has been especially great in May, going 4-1 while allowing just three earned runs, 16 hits, and five walks over 29 innings. Crochet is coming off one of his best outings, holding the Orioles to just two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 11 across six wins. As Milwaukee is swinging the bat, we think they will struggle to figure out the young Chicago pitcher today.
Gasser has filled a critical need for this Brewers team during his rookie season. The lefty has been the team’s best starter through four games this season. He had a rough outing against the Marlins but bounced back to hold the Cubs scoreless on three hits and no walks over six innings. Gasser has a 0.53 ERA across three home starts this season and will deliver another gem this afternoon.
The Cubs have been spiraling down the standings in May, going 8-19. The offense is struggling badly, while their bullpen continues to squander strong outings from Chicago’s impressive pitching staff. While one of those great pitchers will be on the mound tonight, the Cubs will add another loss.
The Reds will have Hunter Greene (3-2, 3.06 ERA) starting in Chicago tonight. The 24-year-old has broken out this season and seems to be getting better as the season goes on. He posted a 2.40 ERA in May and shut down the Dodgers in his last two starts. Greene threw a total of 12 ⅓ innings and held LA to just three runs on nine hits. We expect similar numbers to be posted against an ice-cold Cubs lineup tonight.
The Cubs will turn to their former ace tonight in Justin Steele (0-2, 4.45 ERA). The lefty missed all of April with an injury and was crushed by opposing lineups after returning in May. While Steele is coming off an incredible start against Milwaukee, that is a team he has pitched well against in the past. That’s not the case with the Reds. Steele faced Cincinnati twice last season and allowed 11 runs (8 earned) across just 9 ⅔ innings.
