The Brewers are struggling to win games lately, and that won’t change tonight with Aaron Civale (5-8, 4.62 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) on the mound. The veteran has been better since joining the Brew Crew but continues to be awful on the road. He is 1-3 with a 6.63 ERA when away from Milwaukee, with opponents batting .287 against him.
Civale was incredible against the Giants when he faced them at the end of August, but that came in the friendly confines of Am Fam Field. He is also coming off a rough home start against the Cards, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings, leading to a loss for Milwaukee.
The Brewers bullpen is one of the best in the league, but the Giants will be able to do enough damage to Civale to help cover this total.
The Giants will have rookie Hayden Birdsong (3-5, 5.19 ERA, 1.50 WHIP) starting opposite Civale tonight. The 23-year-old was sharp after debuting at the end of June, but things changed in August. He finished the month going 0-4 with an 8.68 ERA over five starts.
Things didn’t go much better in his first September start. Birdsong allowed two runs on three hits and five walks over three innings, leading the team to lose its sixth straight loss when the rookie starts.

We aren’t sure what changed to help David Peterson (9-1, 2.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) break out for the Mets this season, but he is a big reason for the team’s turnaround. New York has now won six straight starts on the mound, and we expect that number to bump to seven tonight.
The lefty has been especially great since August 1, going 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA. His last start was one of his most impressive, striking out 11 while holding the Red Sox to one run over six innings. That will be bad news for a Blue Jays team that ranks in the bottom half of the league in both ERA and runs scored.
Toronto will have Bowden Francis (8-4, 3.72 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) on the mound against Peterson tonight. The former reliever has stepped up to become a reliable piece of the rotation, posting a 1.05 ERA across 34 ⅓ innings pitching in August.
Francis may find some success tonight against the Mets, but he won’t have much support once he exits the game. Toronto’s bullpen has been a nightmare this season, posting the third-highest ERA in the league.
The Mets’ lineup struggled in the first half of the season, but they have been a different beast over the last couple of months. They now rank eighth in runs scored and twelfth in batting average.
