Six outs is all it takes to cash in one of the most entertaining MLB bets in the market and Wednesday’s slate has two NRFIs that stick out above the rest. We target the first game of the day when the anemic Toronto Blue Jays offense faces off against the Baltimore Orioles and end our night fading a pair of lethal pitchers when the Tampa Bay Rays battle it out against the Boston Red Sox. For more information about the NRFI market and what other factors to look for when making a wager on them, read our breakdown of Daily No Run First Inning.

It’s normally less than ideal to back a NRFI in a game involving a productive offense who leads the AL East standings, but the Baltimore Orioles are actually flirting with negative regression when digging into their offensive metrics. While they do rank well above average in Runs Scored and RBIs, they drastically fall down the board and rank below average in Team Total Hits and On Base Percentage.
That indicates that the Orioles offense have maximized their scoring chances when on base while running cold for a majority of the contest. Expect the Orioles bats to continue to run cold against the Blue Jays Yusei Kikuchi who has had a productive start to his season. Going into this matchup, Kikuchi possesses an ERA of 2.64, a WHIP of 1.049, a blistering 46 Strikeouts, and 14 Earned Runs Against in eight games played.
While the Orioles offense has managed to remain productive, the Blue Jays offense has yet to show up this season. An oddity for a unit that has one of the better top of the orders in the league, yet the Blue Jays offense ranks well below average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Former contending Hits Leader Bo Bichette burdens a majority of the blame as he continues to struggle with consistency and is creeping down the batting order.
Bichette and company are now poised to continue to struggle against the Orioles Cole Irvin as he has proven to be a productive starting pitcher who plays behind the likes of Cy Young contender Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez. Irvin goes into the matchup with an ERA of 2.90, a WHIP of 1.066, just 35 Hits Allowed, and 13 Earned Runs Against in seven games played.

While the Orioles are flirting with negative regression for their ability to churn in Runs while ranking below average in Hits and On Base Percentage, the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Both offenses rank above average in Team Total Hits and On Base Percentage but have struggled to turn them into Runs by ranking below average in Team Total Runs and RBIs.
Luckily for the NRFI, both offenses are poised to continue to struggle as they face off against two productive pitchers. Starting with the Red Sox, starting pitcher Tanner Houck takes the mound for his ninth appearance this season. Houck enters the contest with an ERA of 2.24 and a WHIP of 0.975. His WHIP is especially inviting to back as it indicates less than one batter makes it on base per inning, minimizing scoring opportunities from a potential single.
As for the Rays, they trot out Taj Bradley who has started out his year off on the right foot by turning in a performance of a 1.50 ERA and a WHIP of 1.000. Granted he has only appeared in one game this season, but his uptick in aggressiveness led to seven Strikeouts and now gets the opportunity to continue building momentum against an underwhelming Red Sox offense.
