Our first MLB NRFI play for Tuesday comes from Pittsburgh, where the Oakland Athletics take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Expect the first inning of this game to go scoreless, thanks in large part to the anemic offenses that are on both sides of this contest. Combine that with a legitimate Cy Young candidate taking the mound on one side, and we should see this game go scoreless well beyond the first six outs of the game.
On the Pittsburgh side of this pitching matchup, Mitch Keller is on the hill, who has been electric this season for the Pirates. Keller is 7-1 with a 3.25 ERA this season and has worked his way into the NL Cy Young conversation as a result. Look for him to come out firing early, further helping his Cy Young candidacy with not just a scoreless first inning, but a dominant performance overall.
Also helping this game to stay scoreless in the first inning will be the lackluster hitting on both sides of this contest. Oakland is the worst-scoring team in baseball this season, averaging well under four runs per game for the season. But Pittsburgh is not all that much better, as they rank in the bottom half of the league in runs scored themselves, which should help the NRFI come in for this matchup.

Next up, expect another pitcher who was a Cy Young contender in the National League at one point to help a game stay scoreless through the first inning. The Milwaukee Brewers will send Freddy Peralta to the mound to oppose Kyle Gibson of the Baltimore Orioles. The result should be a first inning that does not feature any fireworks in the state of Wisconsin.
Peralta has fallen out of the NL Cy Young race somewhat, thanks to the incredible starts to the season from Spencer Strider and Zac Gallen. But he is still one of the better-starting arms in the National League, averaging over a strikeout per inning on the season so far. Look for Peralta to do his part in the top half of the first inning to keep this game scoreless heading into the second frame.
On the other side of this pitching matchup, Kyle Gibson has been excellent in his own right for the Orioles. The Baltimore right-hander is 7-3 on the season so far, posting a very respectable 3.89 ERA. Gibson will hold the Brewers scoreless in the bottom of the first, as he will be able to take advantage of the Brewers ranking in the bottom five in scoring early into the month of June.

Finally, we look to Miami for yet another NRFI selection, this time in the matchup between the Kansas City Royals and Miami Marlins. Statistically speaking, this game is perfect for betting the NRFI market, as both offenses are struggling in a big way to this point in the 2023 season. Combine that with serviceable starting pitching on both sides, and this contest should be deadlocked at zero going into the second inning.
While the wins have not been there for Zack Greinke so far this year, he has not been terrible individually by any means. Greinke faces Miami’s Jesus Luzardo on the mound in this one, who has been better than Sandy Alcantara in terms of his ability to prevent opponents from scoring. Look for both of these pitchers to do enough to hold down some less than impressive lineups on both sides.
Speaking of those lineups, both of these teams are in the bottom-10 in baseball in runs scored. While Luis Arraez looks like a possible threat to hit .400 this season for the Marlins, Miami ranks 25th in runs scored this year, while the Royals rank 27th. Expect a quiet first inning from these quiet offensive ballclubs.
