With a pair of underwhelming pitchers set to take the mound, we target the matchup between the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins as both offenses are in a position to open up the scoring early. Before that takes place, we turn our attention towards the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees as the Pirates lowly offense will receive an uptick in production in a favorable matchup against Carlos Rodon.

After last night’s costly loss to the Miami Marlins, the Minnesota Twins playoff hopes look bleak as they are currently three games back from the Detroit Tigers in the wildcard standings for the last wildcard spot with only three games left in the regular season. They do hold the tiebreaker over the Tigers should they match their record, yet Detroit only needs to win one of their three games against the Chicago White Sox to secure a playoff berth.
Should the Twins want to avoid missing out on the playoffs, then they must sweep the Orioles in their three game series while hoping the Tigers lose out to the White Sox. In order to beat the Orioles, their offense will need to continue to play at a high rate as both units enter Friday’s contest ranked well above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
Fortunately for Minnesota, their offense gets the benefit of swinging against the Orioles Cade Povich who has been a routine fade target for our daily YRFI series. In 15 starts this season, Povich has consistently struggled with limiting opposing offensive production as he takes the mound averaging over one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while generating an ERA of 5.59, a WHIP of 1.500, and a FIP of 4.92.
As for the Orioles, their offense also gets a favorable matchup as they are set to face off against the Twins Pablo Lopez. Once listed as a Cy Young contender earlier in the year, Lopez swiftly fell down the oddsboard as opposing offenses started to turn their Hits into Runs Scored at a higher rate. With the Orioles excelling at making contact, as well as the Twins regressing down to league average in Defensive Efficiency, expect Lopez to continue to struggle with keeping opposing runners out of scoring position.

With only three games remaining in the regular season, the New York Yankees are in full control of their own destiny for the first overall seed in the playoffs as they currently have a one game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the overall standings. Should the Yankees manage to secure the top seed in the AL, they will increase their chances of making a run to the World Series as they will get a bye for the first round of the playoffs as well as home field advantage in the later rounds.
Heading into Friday, the Yankees will have an opportunity to pad their lead over the Guardians as their offense gets the benefit of swinging against the Pirates Jared Jones. After a hot start to his rookie season, Jones has shown signs of regression as he has continued to struggle with limiting opposing scoring production. With MVP front runner Aaron Judge and Juan Soto kicking things off, expect Jones to struggle from the opening pitch as both star caliber batters possess an elite blend of power and contact ability.
On the other side of the field, the Pirates lowly offense are in a position to receive an uptick in offensive production as they are set to face off against the Yankees Carlos Rodon. While Rodon has managed to lower his opposing contact rate as the season progressed, the Yankees pitcher still struggles with keeping opposing runners off the bases due to his lack of command as his WHIP of 1.214 indicates.
