  • UConn cruised through the first weekend of the tournament

  • San Diego State dominated Yale in the second round

  • This is a rematch of the 2023 National Championship

San Diego State will face UConn in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night from TD Garden in Boston. The Huskies defeated the Aztecs in the 2023 National Championship.

UConn was dominant throughout the game, and San Diego State never was in the contest. The Huskies are even stronger in 2024 than during their title run, which shows in the spread.

Connecticut is a 10.5-point favorite against San Diego State and is expected to cruise to the Elite 8. However, the Aztecs will be hungry and seeking revenge after their loss to Connecticut last April.

Here, we will preview the matchup between SDSU and Connecticut and give our best bet for the matchup.

San Diego State vs. UConn Prediction and Odds

San Diego State Aztecs Preview

One player defines San Diego State. Jaedon LeDee, the All-American forward, has been the Aztecs’ star this season, and he is playing his best basketball at the perfect time.

LeDee can play in the low post while also thriving at the perimeter. He has been deadly from long range, which makes him very tough to stop.

He averaged 21.5 points this season, ranking him 18th in the country. He also shot 56.4% from the field, which is impressive because of his diverse shot selection.

LeDee terrorized Yale in the second round of the tournament. He scored 26 points and shot 75% from the field with nine boards. He has totaled 58 points and 17 rebounds in his past two games.

Lamont Butler and Reese Waters have been the star guards for San Diego State. When they can score, it takes a lot of pressure off LeDee. Yet, they have consistently struggled to hit double-digit scoring nights throughout the year.

The two players tend to have nights when they boom, and they will need it against UConn. If Waters and Butler aren’t in double figures against Connecticut, their chances of winning drop drastically.

San Diego State survived UAB but failed to cover the spread. The Aztecs were a #5 seed and were taken down to the wire against the 12th-seeded Blazers.

Yet, the team came out on fire against Yale in the second round, winning by 28 points.

UConn Huskies Preview

UConn is the best team in the NCAA Tournament and a heavy favorite to win the National Championship. No program has won back-to-back titles since the 2006-07 Florida Gators, but Connecticut has a great chance based on how they’ve played.

The Huskies only lost three games this year and have looked unstoppable in the Big East and NCAA Tournament. Connecticut started March Madness with a victory over Stetson, where they set the school record for the most significant halftime lead in tournament history.

Connecticut dominated Northwestern in the second round, winning 75-58. The Wildcats aren’t the best team in the tournament, but UConn made them look like a #16 seed.

Connecticut has so many dominant players, making them nearly impossible to stop. Between Donovan Clingan, Cam Spencer, and Tristen Newton, they have by far the best team in America.

San Diego State vs. UConn Pick

It’s never fun to lay 10.5 points in an NCAA Tournament game. However, we can stomach it for the Huskies. If UConn can neutralize LeDee, San Diego State will have no answer for Connecticut.

The Aztecs have also struggled to cover spreads, while UConn went 24-12 ATS this season. Connecticut will stay hot against the spread and roll to the Elite 8.
