The Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) come into the week two road matchup as a slight favorite to the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) despite the tough loss to start the season.
The Chiefs have had one of the top, most reliable offenses in the past few seasons when they had Patrick Mahomes III as their starting quarterback. Last season was a testament to Mahomes' greatness as he created the top-ranked scoring offense (29.2 points per game) and the top-ranked passing offense (297.8 passing yards per game) in his first season with wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Kansas City opened the 2023 NFL Season with a 21-20 loss at home to the Detroit Lions without star tight end Travis Kelce in the lineup. Mahomes found other pass-catchers to get the ball to, but outside of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the receivers struggled to catch the ball.
The defense of the Chiefs allowed 253 yards from Lions quarterback Jared Goff. The pass defense has been one of the biggest weaknesses on the team in the past few seasons, especially last year.
Last season, the Jaguars saw a huge improvement on the offensive side of the ball. In one offseason, head coach Dog Pederson has revamped the offense and turned the Jaguars into an efficient system. It helps third-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence even more that he has a reliable #1 receiver in Calvin Ridley.
This game could be one of the best offensive games through two games this 2023 NFL Season.
Patrick Mahomes III has been one of the best quarterbacks since he took over as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. His rocket arm, incredible accuracy, and clutch decision-making in among the most elite passers in the history of the NFL. Mahomes and the Chiefs go into this game with serious concerns for the passing game as they are expected to have star tight end Travis Kelce play on Sunday after missing week one, but he may be limited. The more pressing concern is the lack of reliability from the receiving corp of the Chiefs. If they drop multiple passes again, the offense will be limited.
The Kansas City Chiefs had one of the worst pass defenses in the league last season. They continued to show their flaws in week one against the Detroit Lions. The Chiefs are going into this game with some concern that they will allow Jacksonville’s star receiver, Calvin Ridley, to account for another 100-yard game like he did last week.
George Karlaftis is now one of the top pass rushers along the defensive line for the Kansas City Chiefs. The team will depend on his input to create serious pressure on the opposing offenses, with the secondary so weak. Last week, Karlaftis accounted for a tackle for loss and was close to sacking Jared Goff of the Lions multiple times. Look for him to make more of an input in the pass rush.
