Arsenal had already won 10 Premier League games prior to last weekend’s trip to Stamford Bridge, but there is an argument that their 1-0 defeat of Chelsea was their most impressive triumph of the season so far.
For one, Mikel Arteta’s side began the day in second place. Manchester City took to the field a day earlier and knocked Arsenal off the top spot by beating Fulham 2-1, courtesy of a last-gasp Erling Haaland penalty. It would have been deflating for Arsenal’s players and supporters to see that late goal go in at the Etihad Stadium,
Secondly, Arsenal were facing a fellow big-six side away from home for only the second time in 2022/23. On the first occasion, they played well but lost to Manchester United. The Gunners won at Stamford Bridge last term, but their record there in the Premier League era as a whole is mediocre at best.
Arsenal’s 1-0 victory is the sort that can give a title-chasing team genuine belief. Chelsea turned in a poor performance on the day. They are still finding their way under Graham Potter, who will need time to get his ideas across. But that does not diminish the standard of Arsenal’s showing in west London.
The winning goal came from a set piece, but the visitors to the Bridge were the superior team in open play. They kept a clean sheet against opponents that had scored in 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions. The best online sportsbooks still have Manchester City down as title favorites, but Arsenal saw their odds fall after the win against Chelsea.
Another win for Arteta’s side this weekend would see them go into the World Cup break in the first place. That would be a psychological boost for a young team looking to upset the odds this season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers do not have anywhere near as lofty ambitions right now. They head into the weekend in the 19th spot, level on points with last-placed Nottingham Forest. Having begun the campaign hoping to qualify for the Europa League or the Europa Conference League, Wolves are now preoccupied with merely climbing out of the relegation zone.
Julen Lopetegui will officially take charge of the team from Monday onwards, but he is expected to be at Molineux Stadium to watch the game against Arsenal. Steve Davis remains the interim manager for one match, though, and the boyhood Wolves fan knows he has his work cut out.
It has been a miserable start to the campaign for the club from the Black Country. Bruno Lage was sacked after a 2-0 loss to West Ham United at the beginning of October, but there has been no improvement since then. In fact, the Wolves are lower in the table now than they were when the Portuguese departed.
It is no secret that their main problem has been putting the ball in the back of the net. No team in the division has scored as few goals as the Wolves, who have breached opposition backlines on just occasions to date.
For the first time all season, Wolves scored two goals in a game against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out. Unfortunately, though, they conceded three.
Only they and Forest have won fewer than three games so far, while no team in the Premier League has lost more matches than Wolves (eight). There is a talent within the squad, but Lopetegui has a big job on his hands to rebuild the players’ confidence after such a wretched start.
Arsenal kept a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge after keeping Chelsea at arm’s length for most of the encounter. There was little in the way of last-ditch defending from the Gunners, who successfully kept the likes of Mason Mount, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Raheem Sterling quiet.
Previously dismissed as too defensively slack to challenge for the Premier League title, Arsenal are now one of the most solid teams in England. Indeed, no one has conceded fewer goals so far, while only Manchester City are giving up fewer expected goals (a measure of chance quality).
This match is therefore a meeting between the Premier League’s worst attack and its joint-best defense. With that in mind, backing Arsenal to win to nil looks like a sensible selection. It is particularly enticing when you look at the odds available.
Anyone looking to learn how to bet on soccer should know that finding value in the market is a key part of being successful. A wager like this, which can be supported by evidence from the season so far, offers an excellent return and is therefore a smart choice.
