On Wednesday night, the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Guardians will face off in a significant matchup for the AL Wild Card race. The Blue Jays are currently occupying one of the three Wild Card spots in the American League, while the Guardians are giving chase to them. With the Blue Jays sending their ace to the mound for this contest, Toronto will have to take advantage of this opportunity to maintain its grip on the final Wild Card slot.
The Toronto Blue Jays enter Wednesday’s action with a record of 64-51, sitting in third place in the AL East. They are also in third place in the AL Wild Card race, which would be good enough to make the postseason if they can hold onto that spot. Here, the Blue Jays have a chance to extend their lead over the Guardians, while putting pressure on the rest of the AL to keep pace with them.
Kevin Gausman will get the start in this game for the Blue Jays, who has been a contender for the AL Cy Young award for much of this season. He enters this game with a record of 8-6 and an ERA of 3.20. Here, he faces another solid starter in Cleveland’s Logan Allen, which will require Gausman to deliver one of his better starts of the season in order for the Blue Jays to come away with a victory.
Offensively, the Blue Jays should have the advantage over the Guardians coming into this crucial contest for both sides. Toronto ranks 15th in the league in runs scored this season, while the Guardians rank 27th in that department. While Bo Bichette’s absence is something that should hurt the Blue Jays, it shouldn’t make too much of a difference against the reeling Cleveland offense.
The Cleveland Guardians come into this game off of a 1-0 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night. They still have plenty of ground to make up in the Wild Card race, though, as they are four games below .500 entering Wednesday. Here, they look to beat one of the three current Wild Card placeholders to improve their chances of getting into the playoffs later this year.
Logan Allen gets the start for the Guardians in this game, entering with a 5-4 record and an ERA of 3.65. He is averaging about a hit and a strikeout per inning, as he has had a similar statistical season to Gausman over a smaller sample size. This game will serve as a great test for Allen, as he is tasked with going toe-to-toe with someone who is on the short list of candidates to win this year’s Cy Young award.
But Allen will need some run support in order to win this game, and that could be a major concern for the Guardians on Wednesday
