Under normal circumstances, AJ Allmendinger would be the obvious choice to win the Sunoco Go Rewards 200 at Watkins Glen International.
After all, the driver of the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet has triumphed in three of the four NASCAR Xfinity Series road course races this season.
In 22 Xfinity starts on road courses, Allmendinger has collected a phenomenal nine victories and 18 top fives. In addition, he notched the first of his two NASCAR Cup victories at Watkins Glen in 2014.
In three Xfinity races at the 2.45-mile circuit, Allmendinger has finished second all three times, though one of those runner-up results was nullified by disqualification for a ride-height violation.
In Saturday’s race, however, Allmendinger will have to contend not only with the Xfinity regulars but also with interlopers from the Cup Series: reigning Cup champion Kyle Larson, William Byron, Ross Chastain and Cole Custer.
Nevertheless, we like Allmendinger to continue his dominance on the road courses with a victory on Saturday. At +300 he’s no bargain, but he’s a solid pick.
Based on his performance in the Cup Series, Kyle Larson is worthy of consideration as a favorite in the Sunoco Go Rewards 200.
In 25 road course starts in NASCAR’s top division, Larson has scored three wins and a pole position as well as seven top fives and 10 top 10s.
But the Xfinity Series cars are markedly different from the Next Gen Cup cars, and Larson has never recorded a road course win in the Xfinity Series.
Admittedly, Larson has one Xfinity start to his credit this season—and a good one at that. He won the pole and finished second at Road America.
But at +300, we simply like Allmendinger better.
Last year, rookie Ty Gibbs turned heads in his first Xfinity Series start, winning on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course.
Since then, Gibbs has won eight more times, a total that includes road course victories at Watkins Glen in 2021 and Road America earlier this year.
Gibbs is certainly a threat, and we think he’ll beat Larson on Saturday. But we don’t think he’ll beat Allmendinger.
Instead, we prefer a bet on underrated road course racer Justin Allgaier to finish in the top three at +600, and we like Ross Chastain to beat Cole Custer head-to-head at -110
