Following a stoppage in play due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League will now resume the final stages of the knockout round.
Looking ahead, eight teams remain in North America’s premier club competition. Beginning with the completion of the quarterfinal stage this week, the tournament will then move into the semifinals on Dec 19 and then the championship game on Dec 22.
Although they had some complications in the latest round of the Liga MX playoffs back home, Tigres appear like the favorites for the CCL title this month. With arguably the best roster in the Americas, the Liga MX giants are a threatening rival for any and all teams in the competition.
They’ll also be keen on finally winning an international championship. Forever criticized for a lack of silverware outside of Mexico, Tigres will now have a golden opportunity to quiet their doubters who have constantly chastised them for only finding success within Liga MX. Under the guidance of veteran manager Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti — who has countless titles to his name — anything is possible for Tigres in the CCL.
If you’re looking to pick a team that’ll likely lift the trophy, Tigres are easily the most ideal option.

If Tigres end up winning the CCL title, it’ll probably be thanks to French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac. With an impressive supply of strength and technical ability, Gignac has amassed a prodigious total of 125 Liga MX goals for Tigres since 2015.
Here’s the target man up top for the club, and with another trophy potentially in reach for Tigres, much of the attacking efforts will land on the shoulders of the experienced 35-year-old.

The good news for America is that they don’t need to push for a victory here. With a 3-0 lead in hand from the first leg of the CCL quarterfinals, a draw or even a narrow loss would still be enough for them to go through to the semis.
Although it might make sense to assume America will get a win thanks to their overall better roster, they’ll be more than happy to play conservatively against a team that’ll be desperate for goals.
Expect a defensive-minded America to make this a close one.

If there’s one thing we should expect from this game, it’ll be a pragmatic approach from Olimpia that hopes to shut out all attacking opportunities from Montreal.
Already lucky to have a 2-1 lead from their first leg of the quarterfinals, Olimpia are now just 90 minutes away from qualifying for the CCL semis for the very first time. It’ll be a historic moment for the Honduran team, and in their chase of a place in the next round, they’ll park the bus from the very start of this match.
Don’t expect too many goals in this one.

A silver-lining for Cruz Azul not qualifying for last weekend’s Liga MX finals: More time to prepare for the CCL quarterfinal against LAFC. Although the Liga MX side will be without star goalkeeper Jesus “Chuy” Corona, their dominant attacking frontline should do plenty to make up for any potential issues in the net.
As for LAFC, the team has yet to be firing on all cylinders like they were in 2019. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a marquee player like Carlos Vela scored a goal in this week’s encounter, but that said, they’ll need much more than just the winger to defeat a side like Cruz Azul.
Cruz Azul for the win (+135)
