Not only are the Cowboys and the 49ers two of three leaders in NFC futures odds, but they played one another in the divisional round of the 2022 playoffs. The Niners found themselves on top of that meeting 19-12 and advanced to the championship game before devastation fell upon them when Brock Purdy tore his UCL.
The teams rank second and third in average scoring differential (Dallas +20.8, San Francisco +16.8) and have been nothing short of dominant through four weeks. The Niners are a perfect 4-0, while the Cowboys have one loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.
Both teams have question marks at quarterback. That statement is controversial, but hear us out.
Purdy is undefeated as the starter and leads the league in both passer rating and QBR. No questions to be found there.
The second-year pro and most relevant Mr. Irrelevant ever, however, has only trailed for a few minutes in his entire career. He’s facing a Dallas defense that is allowing just 10.8 points per game, the fewest in the league.
On the other side, Dak Prescott has kicked the turnover habit he developed seemingly from nowhere last year and is first in QBR when his team is in the lead but 26th when it is behind. He’s also responsible for only four touchdowns in four games, the same amount his defense and special teams have combined for.
It’s tough to split the margins in this matchup. The four-point spread at major sportsbooks means the oddsmakers view the Niners as about a point better on a neutral field, but the home team is also less prone to random disappointments than the visiting team is.
Here are our picks.
We can see a world in which the Cowboys win this game, but the Niners look like a well-oiled machine with no flaws. The Cowboys also look excellent but showed they can be taken advantage of in their 12-point loss to the Cardinals.
The loss of Trevon Diggs to a torn ACL is also huge in this instance. The Niners have a bevy of weapons at skill positions, including Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey, and others. His absence will likely haunt America’s Team at one point and help the Niners cover the spread.
The Cowboys are going to play with physicality, and the best way to combat that—aside from more brute force—is by keeping the defense off-balance. Samuel is a dynamic player who can score as a runner of pass-catcher and will be used as an off-speed pitcher in key situations.
Samuel scored in two of four games thus far, and we like the value of his line. The Niners are also likely to run right at Micah Parsons to nullify his impact as a pass-rusher.
We don’t foresee the Cowboys having a ton of success running into the brick wall that is the 49ers’ front seven (third in rushing yards allowed). That means that this is going to have to be a Prescott legacy game.
Whether or not Dak lives up to the challenge is a different question, but he’s gone over in three straight games and will hope to atone for the 206 yards he put up in last year’s playoff meeting.
