The Phillies are the far better team, but tonight’s pitching matchup will lead the Nats to victory tonight.
Washington will have Trevor Williams (5-1, 2.19 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) will be on the mound for the Nationals tonight. At the end of May, the veteran was 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA but landed on the IL for over three months. He returned to the team last week and didn’t skip a beat, allowing one run over five innings. He gave up just three hits and no walks while striking out seven.
Williams faced the Astros at the beginning of the season and was great, allowing one run over six innings. Given the injury and improved Astros offense, it's hard to guarantee a similar result, but the pitcher has been leading the Nats to many wins. Washington has won nine of the 12 starts by Williams this season.
Philadelphia will have Ranger Suarez (12-7, 3.15 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) starting opposite Williams. The 29-year-old was one of the top pitchers in baseball in the first half of the season, but he hasn’t looked the same since. Over his last three starts, Suarez is 0-1 with 5.36 ERA.
We don’t like what we have seen from Suarez, and we think it goes beyond the injury that sent him to the IL earlier this summer. The Phillies have lost his two straight games where the pitcher has been starting.
The Nats’ offense has been awful lately, but they are due for a big night. With a struggling Suarez on the mound, they will have a great chance to do just that tonight.

We don’t know who the Astros will choose to rest tonight, but it won’t matter, given the pitching matchup. Houston will have Ronel Blanco on the mound tonight. The 31-year-old has become an elite starter this season, and he has been especially great of late. The righty is 3-0 in September with a 0.95 ERA over four starts. The Astros won all four games.
As impressive as Cleveland has been this season, they have not done much damage at the plate. They rank twentieth in batting average and fourteenth in runs scored.
The Guardians will trot Joey Cantillo (2-3, 4.63 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) out to the mound against the Astros. The rookie has been with the team since late July and seems to be settling in after a rough August.
While Cantillo's September ERA was 1.10, he has faced the White Sox, Rays, and Twins. Those lineups pale in comparison to the Astros team he will face tonight. Houston currently owns the third-best batting average and eighth-best OPS in the league.
