Giants vs Eagles Predictions and Picks

As a division, the NFC East appears to be broken in 2020, and neither of these two teams looks impressive so far, so take the slightly better Eagles in this one and hope that QB Carson Wentz can slip into the groove and cover the spread over these withering Giants.

Pick:

Eagles -3.5 (-110)

The NFC East is dismal right now, with five total wins among the four teams, and only one of them going to either of the franchises in this matchup, the New York Giants currently 1-5 and seeming a bit helpless led by the young Daniel Jones, a QB that has thrown twice as many interceptions (6) as touchdowns (3) so far this season.

The Philadelphia Eagles are not in much better shape, entering Week 7 with a 1-4-1 record and a starting QB, Carson Wentz, who right now has a completion percentage of just 58.7 and has thrown more interceptions (9) than touchdowns (8) this sad 2020 season.

The two NFC East rivals have faced each other 174 times (including 4 postseason games), with the Philadelphia Eagles winning 87 of those games and the New York Giants winning 85 games, as well as two ties.

Can Giant QB Daniel Jones Rise to the Level of an NFL Starter?

This is Giants QB Daniel Jones’ second season in the NFL and it is not going well – so far he has thrown twice as many picks as he has TDs (6 INTs, 3 TDs) and has a QBR of 53.4, not the kind of numbers you want your franchise man to post, even early on.

Jones got thrust under center as a starter too soon, some argue, but in today’s NFL that happens more often to rookie QBs that were picked high in the draft and examples like Aaron Rodgers sitting and watching Brett Favre for years are few and far between.

The hope is that offensive coordinator Jason Garrett can do for Jones what he (in part) did for Dak Prescott in Dallas, which is to give him the type of coaching that brings out his already natural tools and abilities.

Can Eagles QB Carson Wentz Get Back to Producing?

Though his Eagles lost in Week 6 to the Baltimore Ravens, 28-30, it was a partial win for QB Carson Wentz because for the first time this season, he played a game without throwing an interception, so far with two picks in every prior game so far this season except that one week when he only threw one.

For the last few seasons, Wentz has been relatively shaky in terms of production during the regular season, but he is typically far more accurate than he has been in 2020, his completion percentage at just 58.7 right now.

One thing that would help Wentz play better is for his front line to offer him better protection, right now the 25 times he has been sacked during the 2020 season leading the league in that category, not something that helps an injury-prone QB gain confidence in the backfield.

Editor’s Picks

Giants Key Player: (WR) Golden Tate

The key to Jones’ success is in his receivers, and there are none as important on the Giants’ roster than Golden Tate, the eleven-year NFL veteran who brings soft hands and excellent pattern running to New York.

So far, Tate has caught 19 passes off 24 targets for 156 yards and no touchdowns, and that’s after posting six scores during all of last season.

Tate can help Jones gain confidence if he and his young QB can begin to develop more chemistry, especially on the deep balls, giving Jones a surefire place to target when he’s inevitably on the run.

Eagles Key Player: (WR) DeSean Jackson

Right now, in Week 7, Eagles QB Carson Wentz will face a familiar foe, which is injuries to his wide receiving targets, two of them which are currently listed as questionable for this Week 7 matchup.

DeSean Jackson is dealing with a hamstring issue, so far this year he has 10 catches for 121 yards and 0 touchdowns.
