One of the first games of the week five Sunday slate of games could be one of the biggest matchup concerns this early in the 2023 NFL Season. The New York Giants (1-3) are set to go on the road to take on the Miami Dolphins (3-1).
The Dolphins are two weeks from their dominating 70-20 home win over the Denver Broncos and one week removed from their 48-20 tough loss at the Buffalo Bills. New York has suffered brutal losses to three playoff-caliber teams. The most recent loss was a 24-3 loss at home to the Seattle Seahawks this past Monday Night Football.

Miami comes into this game as the top-ranked scoring offense (37.5), total offense (511), passing offense (334.2), and rushing offense (176.8). Head coach Mike McDaniels has developed an offense built on elite speedy playmakers, and dynamic running backs who can be inserted as reliable pass-catchers and an efficient quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, who gets the ball out quickly. Two weeks ago, the Dolphins accumulated 726 total yards (350 from the rushing game) in the 70-20 win over the Broncos.
The New York Giants defense will have the tough task of having to suppress the elite offense of the Dolphins. The problem is that they haven't done a good job of playing well on defense this season. They are ranked 29th in points allowed per game (30.5) and 25th in rushing yards allowed per game (133.8).
While the defense has been bad, the Giants' offense has been inefficient and non-productive. New York ranks 32nd (last) in points allowed per game (11.5), 31st in total offense (252), 30th in passing offense (158) and 22nd in rushing offense (94). It hasn't helped the offense that their best player in running back Saquon Barkley has been injured. Quarterback Daniel Jones has shown an inability to consistently command and drive the offense
The Dolphins' defense has been one of the disappointing aspects of their Super Bowl-contending team. Miami ranks 28th in points allowed per game (29.8), 26th in total yards allowed per game (374.5), 25th in passing yards allowed per game (251), and 21st in rushing yards allowed per game (123.5). Miami is coming off its most disappointing performance since week one in the loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins allowed 414 total yards and an average of 7.4 yards per play.
The Dolphins' offense is looking to get back into gear after their mild performance against the Buffalo Bills. Tua Tagovailoa has a perfect opportunity to help his offense rebound against a bad Giants' defense. Between Dallas, San Francisco, and Seattle, the Dolphins have the more progressive passing offense.
Jones has been unreliable when it comes to his ability as a passer. As a runner, he brings certain value in the RPO schemes. In three of the four games played, Jones has rushed for 43 or more yards.
The Miami Dolphins are looking to rebound on offense and show they are still the team to beat. The Giants' defense is inefficient in stopping a productive and healthy offense. New York has also turned the ball over eight times in four games. While the Dolphins have allowed opposing offenses to score, they are efficient in takeaways and can score themselves.
