The Green Bay Packers defense was embarrassed in Week 8, and they will want to take that out on this injured 49ers team, and the result should be a Packers win in Week 9.

The Green Bay Packers suffered an embarrassing divisional loss to the one-win (now two-win) Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, the result of the Packers’ defense having a difficult time stopping the Vikings’ run game, namely Dalvin Cook, who rushed for 163 yards and 3 TDs.
More injury troubles for the San Francisco 49ers, again with QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who hurt his ankle bad enough to require his backup, Nick Mullins, to sub for him, the team still unable to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8 so now they sit at .500, wondering where 2020 will take them next.
The two NFC franchises have met each other 69 times (including 8 postseason games), with the San Francisco 49ers winning 32 of those matchups and the Green Bay Packers winning 36 of the games, plus they have also tied once.
The Green Bay Packers had a difficult time stopping the run in Week 8, but most of that had to do with the performance of Dalvin Cook, who had returned after missing a couple of games due to a groin injury.
The Packers allowed Cook to gain 163 yards and score three touchdowns in the 22-28 upset loss to the less talented Vikings, and that’s despite a three-touchdown game from their future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers defense is ranked 11th overall right now, so it’s not like that was typical for them, but you can bet the 49ers were watching that one and will run Tevin Coleman (knee) and Jerick McKinnon until Green Bay proves it can stop the run.

The 49ers have seven players who are questionable for this one, plus they have at least sixteen players now on the injured reserve list, so the next man up philosophy will play a huge part in the rest of San Fran’s season.
For this Week 9 matchup, there are at least two key players on offense that might not be able to go, running back Tevin Coleman (knee) and tight end George Kittle (ankle), both critical parts of an offense that attacks through the air and on the ground equally.
The main injury that San Francisco fans are watching is the one to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, an ankle situation that took him out of the game in Week 8 and which could prove to be a factor for the rest of the season if it serves to slow him down and make him tentative in the backfield.
Third-year tight end Robert Tonyan had a big Week 8 for the Packers in their loss to the Vikings, posting 5 receptions off 7 targets for 79 yards but no touchdowns, proving to be a reliable outlet man for QB Aaron Rodgers.
Tonyan has shown that he can not only catch the ball, but he can also get into the endzone with it, so far this season with 5 touchdowns, and that’s in a three-year NFL career where he has only had a single touchdown in his first two seasons.
For the Packers to be effective through the air, Tonyan and TE Marcedes Lewis will have to use their soft hands and size to play a key role in the middle of the field where the bigger linebackers tend to hit hard, which often frightens some of the smaller wide receivers away.
San Francisco’s QB Jimmy Garoppolo has listed as questionable for this Week 9 matchup with the Packers due to reinjuring the ankle he had originally hurt in Week 2 when he suffered a sprain against the New York Jets.
Garoppolo left the Week 8 game in the fourth quarter along with his tight end George Kittle, having already completed just 11-of-16 for 84 yards and no touchdowns with an interception for a passer rating of 55.2.
Garoppolo has thrown 5 picks on the season and has been sacked 11 times, so it has been a tough year for the seven-year veteran, and now he will be a game-time decision for Week 9, not the type of season for which anyone in SF was hoping.
