Thrashing by PSG Leaves Atletico Madrid with Work to Do

Atletico Madrid got their Club World Cup campaign off to a dismal start, as they went down to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. It was a disappointing performance from Diego Simeone’s side, and the result immediately put them on the back foot in Group B. It meant a win was essential on matchday two.

Atletico did not have everything their own way against Seattle Sounders, but the important thing was that they got the job done. A 3-1 triumph has kept them in the conversation for a place in the knockout phase, but Atletico still have plenty of work to do.

In order to secure a top-two finish, Atletico probably need to beat Botafogo by three clear goals to overturn their deficit on goal differential. That is a tall order. Simeone’s side could be on the verge of heading home.

Botafogo in Control but They Are Not Over the Line Just Yet

Botafogo know that they are in an excellent position with one game left to play. No one was surprised to see the Brazilian club beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 in their first match, but a 1-0 victory over PSG did make the rest of the competition sit up and take notice.

It was a brilliant result for Botafogo and one which means they are almost over the line in their bid to reach the last 16.

Renato Paiva must now ensure his players are fully focused on the task at hand before they begin thinking about the knockouts.

This Could Be One of the Most Watchable Games of Group Stage

Although you would obviously rather be in Botafogo’s position than Atletico Madrid’s, there is a danger of the former being caught in two minds. When a narrow defeat is enough for them to go through, how exactly should Botafogo approach this match?

For Atletico, understanding the task is simple - even if executing it is not. Simeone’s side are renowned for their battling qualities, but they have surely given themselves too much to do with just 90 minutes of soccer left.

If Botafogo can find the back of the net on matchday three, they will complicate Atletico’s task further. Goals at both ends is the way to go.
