How Does Underdog Fantasy Work?

As one of the best daily fantasy sports sites available today, Underdog built its reputation on massive Best Ball drafts and straightforward Pick'em contests. While the app recently expanded to include a peer to peer prediction market called Underdog Predict, the core of the experience remains firmly rooted in accessible, easy to play fantasy sports.

The daily fantasy contests are designed to be incredibly simple. Instead of spending hours building complex rosters while navigating strict salary caps, you are usually just answering basic questions. For example, you might choose whether Luka Doncic will score higher or lower than 30.5 points, or if Rory McIlroy will make four birdies or better. This streamlined approach makes the platform perfect for beginners and casual sports fans who want a quick way to get in on the action.

Because the legal definitions of daily fantasy sports vary across the country, Underdog operates differently depending on your location. Underdog Fantasy User Experience

The first thing I noticed about Underdog is its smooth and uncomplicated design, which is ideal for beginners and casual players. While my initial impression was positive, I didn't realize just how much I would come to enjoy Underdog.

Although I tested both mobile and desktop, I found myself coming back to the mobile app more than opening my laptop. All of Underdogs' features were well laid out and, other than some quick reading on how their mobile Drafts work, I understood everything easily. If, like me, you're a cell phone enjoyer, you'll quickly see how the layout on Underdog Fantasy stands out.

In the past, when using DFS apps, I have found myself confused by the overwhelming amount of information on a smaller screen, but I was pleasantly surprised by Underdog’s user interface.

The opening page on the mobile app allowed me to swipe left three times before I signed up, showing me some features of the app. It’s a nice introduction that eases beginners into the experience. It showed me some features like their Pick'em contests, their draft feature, and some helpful tips about the platform.

The sign-up process was quick and easy. All I had to do was click on “sign-up,” choose a username, confirm my birthday, enter my email and set a password. This took me about two minutes and I was all set up.

Now set up, I looked through the app. I first wanted to check out their Pick'em tab, as it intrigued me the most. 

The first thing that caught my eye was a section called “popular players”. As I swiped through, I found myself liking how it was laid out more and more. Each player had four visible options and a “view more” tab. The part I liked the most about the Pick'em tab was how each player had their name and a picture of them visible. This is a simple touch that really adds to the overall experience and makes it easy for anyone who knows a player's face but can’t think of their name. 

Next, I went to the Drafts section of the app. I found the layout of this section inferior to the Pick'em section of the mobile app. It was cluttered and confusing at times, and took me a while to understand it - in contrast to the immediate understanding of the Pick'em section. 

You can filter each contest by sport and it lays out how much the entry and prizes are. One thing I would like to see improved about the Drafts section is to give more of an explanation of what each draft entails and how you can win. For me, it was more a case of trial and error. 

I also tested out the desktop website and found it pretty similar to the mobile app overall. I enjoyed the layout and thought the Drafts section looked and operated better on the desktop version, where there was more space.  I appreciated the option to toggle between dark mode and light mode to suit my playing experience.

Finally, I tried the site on mobile via a browser. This was the least effective way to use the site, as I struggled to find where to sign in and it kept directing me to the mobile app. 

Personally, I enjoyed the mobile app experience the most. It will be the platform I use when using Underdog. It really felt as if the developers put a lot of time into making the mobile app both usable and visually appealing, and it worked. 

Underdog Fantasy Features

Underdog provides a relatively small selection of contests and features, all of which I had a lot of fun getting to know. Let’s jump in. 

Pick’em

Underdog Pick'em allows you to make higher or lower projections on different players during their games. It’s inspired by Over/Under prop betting at real money sportsbooks. 

The first thing that stood out to me was the vast number of sports options available when making picks. I saw 13 different options when I clicked on “view more.”

They can get pretty specific, too, including alternate lines and other prop-inspired contests. I opted into a contest based on the number of Q1 points for Jayson Tatum, for instance, which I found more engaging than the standard options. It meant I paid closer attention than I normally would to each quarter and how the players were doing. 

I really liked how the “view more” tab had news about the player at the bottom, along with their past performances. Underdog does a really excellent job of this: combining their contests with sports news and stats. It feels like you’re learning even when you’re not actually entering the contests. 

The multiplier boost on the Pick'em section of the platform was another great feature. I was able to make two picks on an NBA player's total points, and the payout was $30. There's a feature called "flex picks," which I loved too. Flex entries take 3 to 8 picks and still pay if you miss one, or two on entries of 6 or more picks. A 3-pick Flex with one miss pays 1.09x your entry.

Champions

Pick'em Champions is a best of both worlds feature that takes standard higher or lower projections and turns them into a peer to peer tournament. Instead of simply trying to beat the house, you create a lineup of up to eight player stats and compete directly against other users. It is a fantastic hybrid that blends the simplicity of making picks with the competitive thrill of daily fantasy tournaments.

When I first tried building a Champions entry, I was impressed by how familiar the interface felt. If you have ever used the regular Pick'em tab, jumping into Champions is completely seamless. I put together a five player NBA slate, mixing some higher projections on points with a few lower projections on rebounds. The strategy changes slightly in this mode because you are not just trying to get a perfect card; you are actively trying to outscore the rest of the field to claim a larger share of the prize pool.

Just like the standard games, Underdog includes a Flex option for those who want to play it a bit safer. I opted to Flex my entry, meaning I could still walk away with a win after one miss; Flex entries of 6 to 8 picks can survive two. Your success in this mode earns you Champions Points, and your final payout depends on how your point total stacks up against everyone else. It adds a really engaging, strategic layer to the traditional format.

Champions is available to players in AL, AZ, AR, CA, CO, DC, DE, FL, IL, KS, KY, MO, NH, NC, TN, VT, VA, WV, and WY.

Champions entries can win up to 500x your entry, and across Underdog you can now add team picks, like moneylines, spreads, and totals, to the same entry as player picks.

Cash Out

Pick'em and Champions entries can be cashed out early once games are underway, locking in a payout before every player finishes. Cash Out isn't available on Flex entries, it doesn't count toward playthrough, and on entries made with bonus funds the button only appears once the cash-out value passes 2x.

Drafts

The Underdog Drafts feature allows you to enter a team of sports stars and compete against other players for a prize. The idea is closer to the classic DFS contests pioneered by DraftKings and FanDuel, although the software felt more confusing to me. Compared with the immediacy of the Pick’em section, it took me a while to understand the different formats and prize pools. 

During my review, there was a wide variety of drafts per sport, ranging from $5 to $1,000 entries for six different sports, although this list gets updated all the time depending on what’s happening in the world of sports. 

As I explored, the software became easier to use. I like the little information icon beside each contest, explaining the Basic Info, Prize Breakdown and Scoring. The scoring is something that will take a little while to get used to, and I recommend playing some minimum buy-in Drafts first while you get a feel for what rewards players the most. 

I started off with a $3, three-person NBA Draft. For this, the winner received $8, meaning Underdog kept $1 from the buy-ins. I appreciate that they make the cut obvious in this way.

Predictions

Predict is the newest feature on the platform, and it completely shifts the gears from traditional fantasy sports to a peer to peer prediction market. Instead of playing against the house, you are buying and selling event contracts directly with other users based on real world outcomes like game winners, point spreads, or even specific player stats.

When I first opened the Predict tab, the interface immediately grabbed my attention. Every outcome is broken down into simple Yes or No contracts, with prices fluctuating in real time between $0.00 and $1.00 based on how the crowd is trading. I decided to test the waters by buying a few Yes contracts on a popular NBA team to cover the spread. The dynamic pricing made the whole experience incredibly engaging, as I could actually watch the contract value shift as the game approached.

I really appreciate how Underdog integrated this feature directly into their main app. You don't need a separate app to switch between your daily fantasy drafts and your prediction trades, though Underdog keeps prediction funds in a separate account behind the scenes. It is all housed under one roof, making it exceptionally easy to navigate. You can read more about it in our separate Underdog Prediction review.

Underdog Predict runs on CFTC-regulated event contracts, traded either on Underdog's own exchange (Aristotle Exchange, known as UDX, which Underdog bought in 2026) or through UDM, LLC, a registered futures commission merchant, on exchanges like Kalshi and Crypto.com. That's why it's available in states where DFS Pick'em is restricted.

News Feed

Underdog Fantasy’s news feed was something that complemented the platform well. Essentially, it’s a news aggregator, publishing articles about all the upcoming sports featured on the site. It’s a great place to go to check out the latest updates. 

I often looked at the news feed, as it had information that was crucial to making my picks. It felt like having a sidekick with tons of information at my fingertips. I especially liked how the news feed was integrated into the “pick’em’ tab, helping me stay informed about the latest news before I made my picks.

Rips

Rips are digital card packs you can open in the app, and they're available in every state where Underdog operates, including Michigan, where no other Underdog product is offered. New users who sign up with a referral code also get a free Rips pack.

Underdog Fantasy Banking Options and Payout Speed

Deposits Options

Depositing and withdrawing funds from Underdog Fantasy is very straightforward. For deposits, you can use Visa and Mastercard debit or credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and online banking through Trustly, with a $10 minimum.

I chose to use my VISA card to deposit $20. The process was virtually indistinguishable from any other purchase online. My phone automatically remembered my card details, so I just had to type in my CVV number. The money hit my account immediately.

Later, I added another $10 via PayPal, which was similarly very smooth. I just followed the instructions and then confirmed the transaction from my PayPal app. Simple. 

Withdrawal Options

Withdrawing was also quite simple. You can withdraw to PayPal, Venmo, online banking through Trustly, a Visa or Mastercard debit card, Apple Pay (Visa debit only), or Paysafe. PayPal, Venmo, debit cards, and Apple Pay only unlock for withdrawals after you deposit with them, and credit cards can't be used for withdrawals.

I found using PayPal for both deposits and withdrawals to be convenient and effective. The process is very similar to depositing. After I made the request, the money hit my PayPal account within 12 hours. 

Payment Speeds

No complaints from me about the Underdog payment speeds. Underdog processes withdrawals within 48 to 72 hours of the request, debit card payouts then settle in about 24 hours, and Trustly bank transfers can take another 1 to 3 business days. Withdrawals are free, and PayPal or a debit card is the quickest way to get paid.

Underdog Fantasy Customer Support

While using Underdog I decided to give their customer support a try. To do this, I opened the mobile app and went to the “Account” tab. While there, I navigated to an option called “Contact Support”.

I found a comprehensive help center and FAQ, and links to their responsible gambling resources and innovative GuardDog platform. To contact a customer service representative, I clicked “Send Us A Message” and sent my question regarding where their contests are available in the United States to Underdog Fantasy’s team. 

It took them just under two hours to get back to me. This was not ideal since I've used other platforms that get back to me in minutes. Underdog calls in-app chat its fastest support channel, so don't expect an instant answer during busy periods.

When they got back to me, they sent me a message directly on their mobile app. As soon as the message came in, I was notified. I enjoyed how the messaging system is set up on the mobile app. It was easy to use and I liked how it was all in one place. It’s a pet peeve of mine when I’m messaging customer support on platforms and my email inbox gets flooded with each message.

One positive thing about their customer support was how detailed the answer they gave me was. The person I was in contact with wrote me a long message back and answered my questions. They also added extra pieces of information I didn’t directly ask for, which I found helpful. 

You are also able to reach Underdog on social media. I looked over on X and was happy to see lots of interactions between the Underdog team and the general public. You are also able to reach out to Underdog via email at support@underdogsports.com, which is another good option. I tried this too and received a response the following day - although I sent my original message at almost 9pm. 

Overall, I'm satisfied, although faster chat replies would be a welcome improvement.

Underdog Fantasy Responsible Gaming

I’m happy to report that Underdog has a very detailed Responsible Gaming section that includes some useful and novel tools to help players stay safe. You can find the full section by scrolling to the bottom of the page, and some of the tools appear on your account home screen too. 

The Responsible Gaming section is extremely detailed. Underdog lists many resources on the platform to aid users in finding the help they need, including multiple resources for different states. It means the help available feels personalized, rather than one-size-fits all general information. Underdog also gives you the option to contact them about anyone you know who may have an issue, which I thought was a great idea. 

You can set daily, weekly, or monthly limits on how much you deposit, how many entries you submit, and the maximum entry fee per entry. Again, it feels like they are going the extra mile to provide a tailored experience, keeping the player in control. There's also a cool-off option, from 3 days to 9 months, and self-exclusion from 1 year up to a lifetime for anyone really struggling with their gambling. Overall, I’m impressed with the extent of the Responsible Gaming initiatives on offer. 

Where Is Underdog Fantasy Legal?

Underdog offers at least one product in 49 states and Washington DC. It is unavailable only in Nevada (plus US territories), and in Michigan, the only product available is Rips card packs.

Signing up for Underdog Fantasy was very easy. The entire process took me under 2 minutes, and the multi-step process is very similar to the registration process at other operators.

Underdog Fantasy Final Verdict

After my experience on Underdog, I’m happy to give it my seal of approval. In particular, I think this is an ideal platform for beginners and casual players, as well as general sports fans who are curious about the world of DFS. 

Compared with the top DFS sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, it offers a more streamlined experience. Both the Drafts and Pick’em contests are very easy to understand, with no barrier to entry for new players. I love the Pick'em contests in particular; it's normally as simple as choosing higher or lower on a player's stat. 

The News Feed and Rankings sections are both great for sports fans in general. During my Underdog fantasy review, I found myself periodically checking the News Feed just to see what was going on, as if it were ESPN. 

I can’t speak highly enough of their mobile app. When designing the app, visual appeal was clearly high on their list of priorities, as it comes off as clean and easy on the eyes. Adding the faces of the players who you were picking made for a great user experience and helped me get to know new players. 

Although the overall experience was good for me, there were a couple of things I didn’t enjoy. The Drafts section of both the website and the mobile app was a little crowded and wasn’t as crisp as other sections on the platform. 

PayPal worked well for me, and Venmo and debit cards are now options too, though Cash App would still be a welcome addition.

Overall, Underdog is a quality platform, and I’m happy to recommend trying it for yourself.
