Bayern Munich in Pole Position to Secure Top Spot in Group C

Bayern Munich have qualified for the knockout stage of the Club World Cup with a game to spare. They got the ball rolling with a 10-0 demolition of Auckland City, the part-timers from New Zealand. Bayern then beat Boca Juniors 2-1 to secure their place in the next round. If they avoid defeat here, the German giants will top Group C.

Stiffer tests lie ahead and nothing of significance can be read into a meeting with Auckland, but Vincent Kompany will be pleased with the way his team have started their campaign in the USA.

The goal now is to keep up the momentum by beating Benfica. As mentioned above, a draw would be enough for Bayern to go through in the first place, but they will not deliberately play for a point.

Goal Difference Could Be a Factor in Deciding Benfica’s Fate

Benfica are sitting on four points after two rounds of group games. A win would see them secure top spot in the group, potentially setting up a last-16 clash with Chelsea. A draw would see them go through in second, but a defeat would leave them in a vulnerable position.

Indeed, if Benfica were to lose and Boca Juniors were to beat Auckland City (something which is virtually guaranteed), it would all come down to goal difference. Benfica have a seven-goal advantage in that category, but Boca should thrash Auckland in Nashville.

To save themselves any such stress, Benfica will be desperate to get a result against Bayern - although it will not be easy.

Bayern Munich Likely to Prove Too Strong for Benfica Here

There is a chance that Bayern Munich will shuffle their pack ahead of the round of 16, but even if Kompany does rest a few of his starters, there will be plenty of quality on the pitch.

Benfica showed great character to recover from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Boca Juniors on matchday one. But this is a step up for Bruno Lage’s men and they are likely to be outclassed by a Bayern team that has looked pretty good in recent months.

Bayern do not need to win this one, but they will probably do so anyway.
