Chelsea Not Complete Package Despite Clear Progress

Chelsea ended the 2024/25 season strongly, winning the Conference League and securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. They therefore arrived in the USA with momentum behind them, although there were also signs of fatigue after a long campaign back in Europe.

Chelsea got their Club World Cup campaign under way with a routine 2-0 victory over LAFC. However, a 3-1 defeat by Flamengo on matchday two showed that Enzo Maresca’s men are by no means the finished article. Chelsea then beat Esperance de Tunis 3-0 last time out.

In a way, that loss to Flamengo may have done Chelsea a favour. Had they won the group, they would have faced Bayern Munich rather than Benfica. That does not mean they should take the Portuguese outfit lightly, but Benfica are patently kinder last-16 opponents.

Benfica Aiming to Cause Another Upset After Bayern Victory

Benfica might dispute that statement given they beat Bayern Munich in the group stage, a result which allowed them to finish top. However, Vincent Kompany heavily rotated his team on matchday three, so Benfica were not facing a full-strength Bayern side.

Still, Bruno Lage’s crew deserve credit for their return of seven points in Group C, even if their 6-0 victory over Auckland City was in effect a walkover.

Benfica showed great character in their first game, coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Boca Juniors. They will need to demonstrate similar resolve against Chelsea, when they will have less of the ball than they are accustomed to in Portugal.

Extra Time or Penalties Might Be Required in This Match

The best online sportsbooks have Chelsea down as favorites, but this match will probably be close. The Blues have made progress under Maresca, but they are still some way short of the level they reached at their peak in the Roman Abramovich years.

Benfica are a capable side. True, their defeat of Bayern was against an XI which did not feature the likes of Harry Kane, Michael Olise or Jamal Musiala. But it was still an impressive result for Lage’s team to pull off.

A draw looks like the best bet here. We might need extra time or penalties to determine the winner of this last-16 clash in Charlotte.
