Borussia Dortmund Won Their Group and Now Eye Quarters

Borussia Dortmund ended the Bundesliga season in fantastic form, surging up the standings to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League. That gave them some momentum to take into the Club World Cup, where a reasonably kind draw smoothed their chances of going far.

Dortmund topped their group as expected. They were disappointing in a goalless draw with Fluminense on matchday one, but BVB recovered to beat Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 and Ulsan HD 1-0. The victories were not by particularly wide margins, but Dortmund were worthy winners of Group F.

They will fancy their chances in the round of 16 too. Niko Kovac will want to see more from his side here, but Dortmund will not necessarily have to be at their absolute best to win this tie. That does not mean they should take anything for granted, but the best online sportsbooks have them down as clear favorites.

Monterrey Do Not Have Anything to Lose in the Round of 16

Monterrey are also unbeaten so far at the Club World Cup, having collected five points out of a possible nine in their group. They began with a creditable 1-1 draw with Inter, before also sharing the points with River Plate following a goalless stalemate. 

Finally, Monterrey beat Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0. That result, together with River’s 2-0 loss to Inter, was enough for them to climb into second spot and secure a place in the knockout phase of the competition.

“Our next game, we know it's very hard,” said Domenec Torrent, looking ahead to Tuesday’s match. “They're another European team that has won a lot of things, a lot of prizes and tournaments and championships in Germany and in Europe.”

Borussia Dortmund Should Have Too Much for Monterrey

Monterrey should feel proud to have made it this far. And while Borussia Dortmund will not be too unhappy about facing them in the round of 16, the feeling is probably mutual. Dortmund are not exactly Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City or Real Madrid.

This will probably not be a blowout, with Monterrey capable of hanging with Dortmund for at least some of this match. But after 90 minutes, the German side’s superior quality will probably have made the difference. Go for a Dortmund win in the final last-16 tie of the tournament.
