Since winning the Champions League in 2021, Chelsea have had a difficult few years. Roman Abramovich was in effect forced to sell the club by the British government, and his successors as owners have at best had mixed success. But there are signs that Chelsea are starting to get it together again. They have qualified for next season’s Champions League and won the Conference League in May. Now they are in the final of the Club World Cup.
It should be pointed out that Chelsea have a reasonably kind run to the final. They have only faced one European team so far, and that was Benfica - a B-list power rather than a true continental heavyweight. Against three Brazilian sides, they have lost one match and won two.
None of that matters now, though. Chelsea are one win away from being crowned inaugural winners of the expanded Club World Cup. That would be a huge boost to a club which has not been able to compete for the biggest honours in recent seasons.
PSG won the Champions League last month by destroying Inter 5-0 in the final. In the USA they have simply picked up from where they left off, brushing aside all-comers to reach the showpiece event. PSG slipped up once in the group phase, losing 1-0 to Botafogo, but they have otherwise won five out of five without conceding a goal.
Real Madrid were the latest team to be demolished by this rampant PSG. In their semi-final on Wednesday, the Parisians stormed into a 3-0 lead by the 24th minute. They scored another after half-time to defeat Xabi Alonso’s side in style.
PSG have some serious momentum behind them. They have been by far the best club side in the world in 2025, and now they need one more victory to make that status official.
Chelsea have undoubtedly made progress over the last couple of months and they ended the 2024/25 season strongly. But they are not yet in PSG’s class and that will be made clear this weekend.
If the Parisians play to their potential at the MetLife Stadium, they will have too much quality for Chelsea. Go for a PSG win inside 90 minutes in the Club World Cup final.
