Are Flamengo Still Brazil’s Best Hope at This Tournament?

Flamengo entered the Club World Cup as Brazil’s best hope. The biggest club in South America’s biggest country, they have put together a talented and balanced squad in the run-up to this tournament. They play an attractive brand of soccer and do not fear anyone. That is potentially a recipe for success.

However, Flamengo must get past Bayern Munich if they are to even make the quarter-finals. That will not be easy, but it is possible. Anyone writing off Filipe Luis’s side does so at their peril.

Flamengo finished top of their group with seven points from nine. They beat Esperance de Tunis 2-0 and then registered an impressive 3-1 victory over Chelsea, before sealing top spot courtesy of a 1-1 draw with LAFC. But this is their biggest test so far.

Bayern Munich Have Made Life Harder for Themselves

Vincent Kompany opted to heavily rotate his team for Bayern Munich’s final group game against Benfica in the knowledge that his team were already through. It was a decision which has backfired. A 1-0 loss to the Portuguese team bumped Bayern down to second place in their group.

They would have faced Chelsea had they won the group, and it is hard to say whether or not that would have been a tougher assignment than a meeting with Flamengo.

But even if Bayern get past the Brazilians, they are likely to face Paris Saint-Germain - a team everyone wanted to avoid - in the last eight. If he had his time again, Kompany might have made a different choice against Benfica.

Hard to Pick a Winner - But There Should Be Goals in Florida

This game has the makings of a Club World Cup classic. It looks like the most intriguing of the eight ties that will take place across the USA over the next few days.

Bayern deserve to be favorites, but they are far from perfect. Flamengo have the tools to take the ball away from the Germans, which is something they are not used to. Filipe Luis’s charges pack a punch in attack, so they will cause Bayern’s shaky defense some problems.

Indeed, goals look to be on the cards in this one. Bayern are better going forward than at the back, and Flamengo are capable of matching them.
