Fluminense Dump Out Inter as Club World Cup Dream Continues

When the knockout stage bracket was confirmed, most people predicted a rematch of the 2023 Champions League final in this slot. After all, Manchester City would surely have little trouble up against Al-Hilal, while Inter were reckoned to have enough to eliminate Fluminense. Spoiler alert: those two games played out very differently indeed.

Fluminense ran out 2-0 winners against Inter to reach the quarter-finals. They scored one goal early and another late on to shock the Italian outfit and register one of the greatest results in the club’s history.

It was a triumph for the club’s manager Renato Gaucho, who sprang a surprise by switching to a 3-5-2 formation. It was a ploy which worked brilliantly, although the coach was keen to play down his own role and praise his players instead. “My team gave everything,” he said. “They stayed focused, dedicated. This group deserves all the credit.”

Al-Hilal Flying the Flag for Asia After Remarkable Last-16 Win

Al-Hilal also pulled off a major upset in the round of 16. In fact, their win was even more of a shock. Manchester City were the favorites to win the entire tournament when their clash with Al-Hilal kicked off. But Pep Guardiola’s side were second best, losing 4-3 after extra time.

Perhaps we should have seen this coming. Al-Hilal gave Real Madrid a major scare on matchday one of the group stage. The two teams drew 1-1 in the end, but Simone Inzaghi’s side were superior in the first half.

No one will underestimate Al-Hilal following their success against Manchester City. It was a brilliant feat for the Saudi side, who gave up plenty of chances but created just as many of their own. Al-Hilal will now believe they can go all the way.

This Is Perhaps the Quarter-Final That Is Hardest to Call

Of all four quarter-finals, this is the toughest to call. For one, Fluminense and Al-Hilal genuinely do seem to be evenly matched. They both have strengths and weaknesses, but there is no major difference in terms of overall quality.

Secondly, it is hard to compare two teams who have never played each other before. Al-Hilal are slight favourites, though, and we feel that is about right.
