Palmeiras Have a Quarter-Final Berth in Their Sights

Brazil will have at least one quarter-finalist at the Club World Cup. All four representatives from South America’s biggest country have made it through to the knockout phase, a fine achievement for the nation. But at least one of those sides is guaranteed to fall by the wayside in the round of 16.

Palmeiras have made it here by topping Group A. They started with a 0-0 draw with Porto, before beating Al Ahly 2-0 on matchday two. They then fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Inter Miami in their most recent outing.

Palmeiras won the Copa Libertadores in 2023 and are going strong in this year’s edition. Abel Ferreira is an astute coach and they have a solid roster to boot. The threat they pose should not be taken lightly by anyone.

Botafogo Exceeded Expectations During the Group Stage

Botafogo were up against it when they were drawn alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid in the group stage, but they exceeded expectations by finishing second. They started with a 2-1 defeat of Seattle Sounders, before Botafogo pulled off a major upset by beating PSG 1-0.

They went on to lose 1-0 to Atletico in their final group game, but that was not enough to send the Spanish side through. Botafogo therefore celebrated at the final whistle, despite having been second best on the night.

They will have to raise their game against Palmeiras, having given up far too many chances against Atletico. Still, this is a new match and Renato Paiva’s team will give it their best shot.

Who Will Triumph When Two Brazilian Outfits Clash?

Botafogo collected more points than Palmeiras in the group stage, despite having much tougher opponents. Despite that, Palmeiras are the better pick to win this round of 16 match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Ferreira is a bright manager whose tactical acumen gives his team an advantage. It is also worth noting that Palmeiras are outperforming Botafogo in this season’s Brazilian league, as well as in the Copa Libertadores.

This will be a hard-fought and potentially low-scoring encounter with both teams desperate to win against a domestic rival.  Our money is on Palmeiras.
