Inter vs. Barcelona Pick

Tip Inter to qualify. Barcelona played some eye-catching soccer last time out, but Inter could pick them off on home turf.

Inter Will Feel They Have Done the Hard Bit After Away Draw

What a pleasure it was to watch Barcelona and Inter go at it last week. The two teams were involved in one of the most entertaining encounters of the 2024/25 soccer season. They could not be separated after 90 minutes, with both sides scoring three times. It was a breathless affair and neutrals will be hoping for more of the same in the return fixture.

Inter, for their part, will feel they have done the hard bit. Going away in the first leg always looked tricky, especially as Simone Inzaghi’s side had suffered a downturn in form beforehand. But Inter stormed into a 2-0 lead and although they could not quite hold on, they achieved their first aim of avoiding defeat on the road.

San Siro, one of the most iconic soccer venues on the planet, will be electric on Tuesday. Inter will look to use the atmosphere to their advantage, but Inzaghi knows that his players need to produce another strong showing on the field. If Inter are not fully focused, Barcelona have the talent to blow them away.

Inter returned to winning ways at the weekend, edging out Hellas Verona 1-0. They still trail Napoli in the Serie A title race, while they were eliminated from the Coppa Italia by local rivals Milan last month. Yet if Inter can win the Champions League, all of that will be forgiven. The Nerazzurri are potentially two games away from glory.

Inter conceded just one goal in eight matches in the league phase of this competition, and it would help immensely if they could rediscover that defensive solidity on Tuesday. Keeping out this Barcelona frontline is not straightforward, however.

Offense Best Form of Defense as Far as Barcelona Concerned

Hansi Flick was keen to focus on the positives after last week’s 3-3 draw. His team looked shaky at the back throughout the match, both from set-pieces and in open play. But Barcelona showed terrific spirit to bounce back from 2-0 and 3-2 down. They also demonstrated how dangerous they can be going forward.

“We didn’t start well, but we got right back into the match,” Flick said afterwards. “The second half was spectacular. There’s one leg of this tie left and we have to win it. I think this qualifies for that description of the 'final before the final!'”

Lamine Yamal was the star of the show. The 17-year-old produced a dazzling display, scoring one goal and tormenting Inter throughout. It was an extraordinary performance from a player who has not even entered adulthood yet.

Barcelona could do with a repeat at San Siro, but they will also need other players to step up. There are concerns over fatigue, however - both physical and mental. Barcelona went all the way in the Copa del Rey and they are still involved in the La Liga title race too. They survived a scare on Saturday, coming from behind to beat bottom-of-the-table Real Valladolid.

The same could be said for Inter, though, since they were also competing on three fronts until recently. Barcelona might be a matter of weeks away from winning the treble. That motivation should allow their players to dig deep and shake off any lingering tiredness.

We Might Need Extra Time or Penalties to Separate This Pair

Had you offered a 3-3 draw to both managers before the first leg, you can guarantee that Inzaghi would have been much happier to accept it than Flick. The sportsbooks still have Barcelona down as favorites to go through, but the odds have narrowed since that result in Catalonia.

“There’s huge satisfaction for having played a great match against what is currently the strongest team in the world,” Inzaghi said. “Of course, being twice in the lead and then having that disallowed goal - which I still don’t understand why it was ruled out - leaves some regret.”

Inzaghi’s game plan worked for large spells in the first game. Barcelona deploy a remarkably high defensive line under Flick in a bid to squeeze the pitch and catch their opponents offside. Inter tried to avoid that trip by making runs from deep - and on several occasions it worked.

Barcelona have the attacking talent to win matches even if they concede two or three goals, but they might not have as much joy in the final third at San Siro. After all, Inter have conceded fewer than two goals in 13 of their last 15 home games in the Champions League.

The Nerazzurri are a canny team who reached the final of this tournament in 2023. They are experienced and difficult to play against, as they showed last week. We now like their chances of getting through, especially at these odds.

The best bet is to back Inter to qualify for the Champions League. This will cover a win in 90 minutes, after extra time or on penalties.
