For the first time since the 1994 World Cup, the USA is the center of the soccer universe this summer. The expanded Club World Cup is receiving the most attention, but the USMNT are also in action over the next few weeks. They are the joint-favorites to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup, level at the top of the betting charts with Mexico.
Yet that does not tell the full story. The mood surrounding the team right now is overwhelmingly negative. A year out from World Cup 2026 and the USMNT do not look ready in the slightest. The positivity that surrounded Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment in September has long since evaporated.
The USMNT’s recent results make for worrying reading. They lost 1-0 to Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals in March, before going down to Canada 2-1 in the third-place play-off. The pre-Gold Cup friendlies also brought pain rather than pleasure, as Pochettino’s team lost 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland.
That means the USMNT have lost four games on the bounce, which makes this their worst run of form since 2007. The Gold Cup gives them a chance to turn things around, albeit against weaker opposition, but it could also compound their misery.
There is plenty of work for Pochettino to do. Granted, the USMNT have a second-string roster available right now, with the likes of Sergino Dest, Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Yunus Musah and Folarin Balogun all absent for the Gold Cup. But the USMNT are still one of the strongest sides in the region.
“The players are very motivated to go to the Gold Cup,” Pochettino said in an attempt to improve the atmosphere around the team. “The circumstances are the circumstances. Maybe we can win the Gold Cup and go to the World Cup and do well. The loss (to Switzerland) won’t have a massive impact on our psychology.”

Trinidad & Tobago memorably qualified for World Cup 2006, an extraordinary achievement for a nation of their size in a 32-team tournament. The event will expand to 48 sides next year, but Trinidad & Tobago will struggle to make it. In round two of qualifying in CONCACAF, they are level on points with minnows Grenada.
The draw for the Gold Cup has not been kind, placing Trinidad & Tobago with the USMNT and Saudi Arabia, two of the four favorites to lift the trophy. Even Haiti will expect to beat the Soca Warriors when those two teams go head-to-head in Group D.
Trinidad & Tobago will still be aiming to do more than merely make up the numbers, and the USMNT’s collapse in form gives them a glimmer of hope on matchday one. But a nation of just over 1 million people is obviously up against it alongside the likes of the USA and Saudi Arabia, plus they have not made it out of the group since 2015.
Dwight Yorke, who starred for Trinidad & Tobago at World Cup 2006, is the new head coach of the national team. The country’s greatest ever player who plied his trade with distinction for Manchester United among others, Yorke has minimal managerial experience, but his countrymen will hope he can inspire his players over the next few weeks.
Alvin Jones of Real Sociedad is the Trinidad & Tobago player who plies his trade at the highest level, while Spartak Moscow’s Levi Garcia is one to watch in attack. Many members of their roster play in the Caribbean, though, which shows why they are underdogs at the Gold Cup.

Fans of the USMNT are right to be concerned about recent results, and there are genuine doubts over whether this under-strength side will be able to win the Gold Cup this summer. Numerous key players are missing and the early signs suggest some fringe squad members are not quite good enough to step up to be regular starters.
Strictly for the purposes of this game, though, the USMNT are likely to have too much quality for Trinidad & Tobago, even without several of their top-tier, Europe-based players.
Pochettino’s side will be desperate to move on from the four consecutive defeats and the manager will encourage his players to attack from the first whistle here. Trinidad & Tobago will struggle to cope.
Yet because there is little value in backing the USMNT (they are overwhelming favorites to win) it is worth a punt on both teams to score.
The Gold Cup hosts have found it tough to keep clean sheets of late, and while Trinidad & Tobago’s offense is hardly world-beating, they could still cause the USMNT a few problems. Goals at both ends looks like a smart selection.
