After beating the Toronto Maple Leafs in game seven in round two of the playoffs, the stage is set for the Eastern Conference Finals with the Florida Panthers battling it out against the Carolina Hurricanes. Expect an uptick in scoring in game one of their series as both offenses excel at generating a high amount of Expected Goals and possess more than enough versatility to stretch out each other's back lines to help open up shooting lanes in front of their net.
The Carolina Hurricanes offense have been in a tier of their own this year as they led the league in Expected Goals For in All Situations and in 5-on-5 Play. Even after trading away Mikko Rantanen, the Hurricanes were able to sustain their high level of play by reconfiguring their depth chart. With Seth Jarvis playing alongside Sebastian Aho, the Hurricanes top line can make an argument for being one of the most productive lines in the league as each player averages over 0.30 Expected Goals per game.
Their versatility will be key against Florida as the Panthers back line ranks top-10 in Expected Goals Against in All Situations while Sergei Bobrovsky gives them a high level of individual production in their net. Fortunately for Carolina, negative regression looms large over the Panthers as the Hurricanes spread out attack will help open up wider gaps in their coverage. This will force Bobrovsky to consistently move across the crease, increasing the likelihood of a gap opening up beside him in his net.
As for the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Panthers offense rivals the Hurricanes in regard to Expected Goals as their offense ranks second overall in Expected Goals For in All Situation with an average of 3.49 per game. Like the Hurricanes, the Panthers offense also features plenty of playmakers throughout their lines as six players average over 0.30 Expected Goals per game. For some more exposure, escalator bet the full game over by sprinkling smaller wagers on the alternate totals.
As previously mentioned, Seth Jarvis has started to generate a higher amount of Expected Goals per game since being slotted in the same line as Sebastian Aho. With his center pulling defensive attention away from him with his own high level of play, Jarvis has had the opportunity to generate higher quality Shots on Goal by exploiting the opposing back line's gaps in coverage. Expect Jarvis to continue to pressure the net at a consistent rate and score a goal in game one of the Eastern Conference Finals.
