After their latest loss in game three, the Carolina Hurricanes are now 0-15 in the Eastern Conference Finals since 2009. A streak that is poised to continue on Monday night with the Florida Panthers playing at a very high level on all three areas of the ice. Expect game four to be another high scoring affair, especially with the Hurricanes goaltending struggling to give them the support they need to remain competitive.
Even though the Carolina Hurricanes were held to just two goals in game three, positive regression looms large over their front line as they generated an Expected Goal of 3.63. A result that has mirrored what the Hurricanes offense have been able to do throughout the playoffs as they currently lead the field in Expected Goals For in All Situations. Their depth helps them consistently pressure the net for the full duration of their contests as six players average over 0.25 Expected Goals per game.
Unfortunately for Carolina, the reigning Stanley Cup champions have shown they can keep pace with their high powered offense as they finished the year ranked second in Expected Goals For in All Situations and are averaging over five goals a game in the ECF. The Hurricanes coverage has been stretched out thin by Florida’s versatility which helps the Panthers generate higher quality Shots on Goal. For some more exposure, escalator bet the full game over by placing smaller wagers on the alternate totals.
Even with positive regression looming over Carolina’s offense, the Panthers are in a great position to close out the series as the Hurricanes have received zero support from their goaltending. As of writing, Frederik Andersen is averaging an astonishing 4.50 Goals Against per game and a Save Percentage of .750 in the Eastern Conference Finals. His back line has also done him no favors in his efforts of rounding back into form as they conceded an Expected Goal of 3.32 in their last contest.
After scoring a goal in game two of their series, Matthew Tkachuk flirted with scoring again as he finished game three with an Expected Goal of 1.05. Should Sam Reinhart be ruled out for game four, then Tkachuk may be in for another high volume workload which drastically increases his chances of scoring. Tkachuk was already one of the Panthers most consistent sources of offensive production this season as the star forward averaged 0.47 Expected Goals and 3.01 Shots on Goal per game.
