Even though the Dallas Stars were held to just one goal in a humbling 6-1 loss in game three of the Western Conference Finals, positive regression looms large per their result in Expected Goals. Especially with Stuart Skinner in net as the Oilers former starting goalie has struggled to give them the individual production they need to help limit the amount of negative variance in their contests.
Since the start of the regular season, the Dallas Stars offense have been one of the more productive units in the league as they finished the year ranked top-10 in Expected Goals For in All Situations. They have managed to sustain their high level of play throughout the postseason as they rank sixth overall of all playoff contenders with an average of 3.25 Expected Goals per game. While a one goal performance in game three may seem alarming on paper, they actually generated an Expected Goal of 2.97.
Fortunately for Dallas, their offense will have the opportunity to round back into form with Stuart Skinner projected to get the start in net for Edmonton. Skinner has struggled to play at a competitive level this season as the former starting goalie averaged 2.81 Goals Against per game and a .896 Save Percentage. With the Oilers offense also grading out well in Expected Goals For, expect game four to be another high scoring affair. Escalator bet the full game over by placing smaller wagers on the alternate totals.
Not only did the Stars generate an Expected Goal of 2.97, but they also slightly edged out the Oilers as a whole. An unfortunate result for Dallas, especially with their starting goalie Jake Oettinger finishing the contest with a -3.61 Goals Saved Above Expected. Even with his back line struggling in coverage, the Stars goalie has been able to play at a competitive level as he averages a Save Percentage of .906. Expect Oettinger to bounce back in a big way and keep the contest close enough to cover the puck line.
After scoring two goals in game one, Tyler Seguin fell back down to reality as he was held scoreless in games two and three. Even during his goal-less performance in game three, Seguin was still able to generate high quality scoring opportunities as he finished the contest with an Expected Goal of 0.32. With his front line stretching out the Oilers coverage, as well as Skinner struggling to play at a competitive level, expect Seguin to continue to pressure the net at a high rate and score a goal in game four.
