Arsenal Show They Are up for the Fight in North London Derby

How Arsenal needed that. A few days after a 2-2 draw with rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers allowed Manchester City right back into the Premier League title race, the Gunners responded by beating their biggest rivals 4-1. Tottenham Hotspur were no match for Arsenal last weekend, as the Gunners restored their five-point cushion at the summit of the standings.

Mikel Arteta’s men had been poor at Wolves. Leading 2-0 early in the second half, they somehow contrived to throw it all away against one of the worst Premier League teams of all time. Yet as bad as they were last Wednesday, Arsenal were just as good against Spurs. True, the opposition was not up to much. But the Gunners played some lovely soccer and deserved to triumph by a margin of three clear goals.

There were a few signs of nerves in the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as there have generally been in recent weeks. Crucially, though, Arsenal steadied themselves and kept playing their usual game. It paid off, as they handsomely defeated their chief adversaries for the second time this season. In truth, it was a more impressive display than that which Manchester City delivered against Newcastle United, whom they beat 2-1, a day earlier.

“It feels like we showed what we are made of," Arteta said after the match. “But then you have to show it again and again and again because if you have to just analyse how you feel after every game, it's a massive rollercoaster and it's not sustainable.

“I cannot be prouder and happier for what I've seen out there, but especially the way we lived the last 72 hours because I think this game in particular needed some context.”

Chelsea’s Fight for Champions League Could Go Down to Wire

Chelsea were left frustrated after their last game. A 1-1 draw with Burnley at Stamford Bridge was a disappointing outcome for Liam Rosenior’s side, especially as they took an early lead through Joao Pedro. The Blues had chances to double their advantage but did not take any of them, leading to a nervy finish after Wesley Fofana was sent off in the 72nd minute.

It looked like Chelsea had done enough. But until the final whistle sounds, a one-goal lead is always precarious, and so it proved. Zian Flemming struck in the third minute of stoppage time, leveling the score for Burnley and instantly stripping away two points from Chelsea's tally.

It could yet prove to be a damaging result. The Blues have a fight on their hands to qualify for the Champions League, and their failure to beat a team that will surely be in the Championship next season was an unduly blow. Some tough tests await: Arsenal away this weekend, followed by meetings with Aston Villa (also away) and Newcastle United (home).

“What has happened with me is we have set fire to four points from two home games,” Rosenior said afterwards, referencing also the draw with Leeds United earlier in February. “Anyone watching the game, it's not good enough for a club of this level.

“It's not good enough for me to come and say we were the better team. We need to be the better team in every game. We need to win games of football. I know what the answer is and we will address it in the week. There's an inquest after every game, whether we win or lose.”

With the race for Champions League soccer set to run until the end of the campaign, Chelsea cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves. What matters now is the response.

Arsenal Would Boost Belief With Another Massive Win Here

The 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur was a real shot in the arm for Arsenal and another win here would be too. The same is true for Manchester City, but the Gunners know that they would be champions if they were to win all their remaining matches. With a five-point lead as things stand, they remain the team to beat in the Premier League.

Chelsea will pose a challenge this weekend. They may have dropped points against Leeds United and Burnley of late, but their general record under the management of Rosenior is good, despite the initial doubts over his candidacy.

Rather than tipping a winner on Sunday, we recommend exploring the goals markets. Specifically, our tip for this London derby is as follows: both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in total.

A price of +120 makes this wager well worth backing. There have been three goals or more in eight of Arsenal’s last 10 games in all competitions, while neither they nor their opponents have kept a clean sheet in their last three Premier League outings.

As for Chelsea, both teams have scored in each of their last five matches in the top flight of English soccer. In all competitions, three of their last four fixtures have contained over 2.5 goals.
